Do you experience neck pain?

Neck pain can build up for lots of reasons — long hours at a desk, poor sleep positions, stress, reduced movement, or simply doing more than your neck is used to.

But persistent neck pain isn’t something you just have to put up with.

Physiotherapy can help identify what’s contributing to your pain, improve movement and strength, and give you practical strategies to reduce flare-ups and get back to moving comfortably.

If your neck has been feeling stiff, sore or just “not quite right”, it might be time to get it checked.

Are you a side sleeper? Your sleeping position could be contributing to your shoulder pain.

If you regularly wake with a sore, stiff or aching shoulder, it’s worth looking at what happens during those 7–8 hours you’re in bed.

Sleeping directly on a painful shoulder can place prolonged pressure through the joint and surrounding tissues. But even sleeping on the opposite side can sometimes aggravate symptoms if the top arm falls forward or isn’t well supported.

A few simple changes may help:

✔️ Try to avoid sleeping directly on the painful shoulder
✔️ When sleeping on your opposite side, hug a pillow to support the sore arm
✔️ Make sure your pillow supports your neck so you’re not collapsing through your shoulder
✔️ If comfortable, try sleeping on your back with a small pillow supporting the affected arm

And remember — your sleeping position may be aggravating your shoulder, but it isn’t necessarily the underlying cause.

If shoulder pain is regularly disturbing your sleep, limiting movement or stopping you doing the things you enjoy, it may be time to have it properly assessed.

At Pottsville & Cabarita Physiotherapy, we can help identify what’s contributing to your pain and develop a plan to get your shoulder moving and feeling better.

Too Much Time at the Computer? Your Shoulders Might Be Telling You Something.

Do your shoulders feel tight, achy or stiff after a day at your desk?

It’s easy to blame your posture, but the real issue is often staying in one position for too long.

When we spend hours using a computer:
• The muscles around the neck and shoulders stay switched on for long periods.
• The shoulder blades stop moving normally.
• The upper back becomes stiff.
• The shoulder joint can become irritated, leading to pain with reaching, lifting or even sleeping.

The good news? You don’t need a “perfect posture.”

✅ Change positions regularly.
✅ Stand up every 30–60 minutes.
✅ Move your shoulders through their full range.
✅ Strengthen the muscles that support your neck, shoulders and upper back.

If shoulder pain is stopping you from working comfortably, don’t just put up with it. The right assessment and exercise program can make a huge difference.

What is the GLA:D® Program for Osteoarthritis?

Have you been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in your hip or knee or told that your joint is “wearing out”?

The GLA:D® program is an evidence-based education and exercise program designed specifically for people experiencing hip or knee osteoarthritis.

Rather than simply resting the joint or relying only on passive treatment, GLA:D® helps you learn how to move safely, build strength and manage your symptoms with greater confidence.

The six-week program includes:

• An individual assessment
• Two education sessions to help you better understand osteoarthritis
• Twelve supervised exercise sessions, completed twice per week
• Exercises tailored to your current ability, symptoms and goals
• A follow-up assessment to measure your progress

During the program, you will work on hip and knee strength, balance, movement control and everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs and getting out of a chair.

GLA:D® may help you:

✓ Reduce hip or knee pain
✓ Improve strength and mobility
✓ Feel more confident using your joint
✓ Stay active and independent
✓ Better manage pain flare-ups
✓ Prepare for surgery—or potentially delay the need for it

Osteoarthritis does not mean you need to stop moving. With the right amount of targeted exercise, your body can become stronger and more capable.

Pain Doesn’t Always Mean Damage

One of the biggest myths we hear is:

“If it hurts, I must be damaging something.”

The truth is… pain and tissue damage are not the same thing.

Pain is your body’s alarm system. Like a smoke alarm, it’s designed to protect you—but sometimes alarms become overly sensitive.

That means you can experience significant pain even when tissues have healed or there is very little damage. On the other hand, people can sometimes have significant tissue damage with surprisingly little pain.

Pain is influenced by many factors, including:
✔️ Previous injuries
✔️ Stress and poor sleep
✔️ Fear of movement
✔️ Fatigue
✔️ Your nervous system becoming more sensitive over time

This doesn’t mean your pain isn’t real, it absolutely is. It means your nervous system may be working overtime to keep you “safe.”

The good news? Just as the alarm system can become more sensitive, it can also become less sensitive.

The right combination of:
✅ Understanding your pain
✅ Gradual movement and exercise
✅ Building confidence
✅ Improving sleep and managing stress

can help calm the nervous system and get you back to doing the things you love.

Don’t let pain convince you that you’re broken. Your body is often stronger and more adaptable than you think.

If pain has been holding you back, we’d love to help you understand what’s really going on and develop a plan to get you moving with confidence.

Why Passive Treatment Alone Often Fails in the Long Term

“I feel great after treatment… but the pain always comes back.”

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

Hands-on treatment—whether it’s massage, dry needling, joint mobilisation or soft tissue work—can be incredibly valuable. It reduces pain, improves movement, and often provides the window of opportunity your body needs to recover.

But here’s the problem: if we stop there, nothing has actually changed.

Pain often develops because your body has lost the capacity to cope with the demands you’re placing on it.

Your muscles may lack strength.
Your tendons may lack load tolerance.
Your balance or coordination may have declined.
Your nervous system may have become overly protective.

Passive treatment can calm the symptoms, but it doesn’t rebuild the system.

Imagine having a flat car battery.

Jump-starting the car gets you moving again, but if you never replace the faulty battery, you’ll soon be stranded in exactly the same place.

Your body works much the same way.

The goal shouldn’t just be to get you out of pain today, it should be to make you more resilient so your body can handle tomorrow. That is what the unique Pottsville and Cabarita Physiotherapy Pain to Performance method is all about.

We not only treat your symptoms but also find causative factors and prescribe the right exercise program to make all the difference.

Not random exercises from the internet.
Not “just strengthen your core.”

A program designed specifically for your body, your goals and your current capacity.

At our clinic, we use hands-on treatment to create change, then we use targeted exercise to help that change last.

Because our goal isn’t to have you needing treatment forever.

It’s to help you build a body that’s stronger, more confident and capable of doing the things you love—with fewer flare-ups along the way.

Temporary relief is nice. Lasting results are better.

5 Signs You Might Need to See a Physio

Not every ache and pain will disappear on its own. If you’re noticing any of these signs, it’s worth getting assessed before a small problem becomes a bigger one.

✔ 1. Pain that lasts longer than 1–2 weeks
Persistent pain is your body’s way of saying something isn’t coping.

✔ 2. You’re avoiding activities you love
Whether it’s walking, gardening, the gym, golf, or playing with the grandkids, changing your life because of pain isn’t normal.

✔ 3. Pain keeps coming back
Temporary relief is great—but if the same problem keeps returning, it’s time to address the underlying cause.

✔ 4. You’re feeling stiff or losing movement
Difficulty turning your neck, reaching overhead, bending, or getting up from a chair can often be improved with the right treatment and exercise.

✔ 5. You’re relying on painkillers to get through the day
Medication can help manage symptoms, but it doesn’t fix the reason the pain is there.

At Pottsville & Cabarita Physiotherapy, we don’t just treat the pain—we help you understand why it’s happening and give you a clear plan to get back to doing what you love.

📞 Don’t wait until it becomes harder to recover. Early treatment often means faster results.

Hip Pain? It Might Not Be a Strength Problem.

Many people with hip pain focus on making their glutes stronger.

But often the issue isn’t maximum strength.

It’s glute endurance.

Your glute muscles are designed to work for long periods while you walk, climb stairs, exercise, run, or simply spend a busy day on your feet.

When they fatigue too quickly, other tissues can end up taking more load than they can comfortably handle.

This can contribute to:
✔ Lateral hip pain (“bursitis”)
✔ Gluteal tendinopathy
✔ Hip stiffness during walking
✔ Pain when standing for long periods
✔ Discomfort after exercise

A common pattern we see is someone who can perform a few strong exercises in the gym, but their glutes struggle to maintain control and support over time.

That’s why rehabilitation isn’t just about lifting heavier.

It’s about building the capacity to:
• Walk longer
• Climb more stairs
• Tolerate daily activities
• Exercise without symptoms flaring up

Strong glutes are important.

Enduring glutes are often the missing piece.

If hip pain is limiting your activity, a tailored assessment can help identify what’s really driving the problem and create a plan to build lasting capacity.

Posture & Headaches: The Missing Link

Many people are told their headaches are caused by “bad posture.”

The reality is a little more complicated.

Research suggests it’s not simply the position you sit in that creates headaches — it’s your body’s ability to tolerate the demands placed on it.

When we spend hours at a desk, driving, studying, or looking down at devices, the muscles and joints of the neck, shoulders and upper back can become overloaded. If those tissues aren’t strong enough or conditioned for the task, symptoms can build over time.

This may contribute to:
• Neck tension and stiffness
• Headaches at the base of the skull
• Temple or forehead headaches
• Jaw tension
• Increased migraine frequency in some people

The solution isn’t forcing yourself to “sit up straight” all day.

It’s about:
✔ Moving regularly
✔ Building strength and endurance
✔ Improving neck, shoulder and upper back capacity
✔ Understanding your individual triggers

Static posture isn’t the enemy.

Underprepared tissue is.

If desk work, study, driving or screen time seems to increase your headaches, a thorough assessment can help identify what’s contributing and what you can do about it.
