🏃 Leg treatment for Melbourne Marathon runners

Your legs work as a team — so why focus on just one muscle?

In this session, we work through the major muscle groups of the legs based on what your body needs, helping you prepare for the Melbourne Marathon or recover after the big day.

Whether you’re building up your kilometres, tapering before race day or recovering after the marathon, looking after your legs can help ease muscle soreness and support comfortable movement.

Strong legs work hard. Give them some care too. 🦵

Meet your IT Band (ITB) 🦵

Did you know the IT band is not a muscle?

The iliotibial band (ITB) is a thick band of connective tissue running along the outside of your thigh. It connects closely with the TFL and gluteus maximus and continues down towards the outside of the knee.

The ITB plays an important role in:
🦵 Supporting hip and knee stability
🏃 Transmitting forces from the muscles around your hip
🚶 Helping your body manage movement during walking and running

So when someone says, “My IT band is tight,” there may be more to the story than simply stretching or massaging the ITB.

Understanding the anatomy helps us understand what might actually need attention.

Is your ITB complaining? 🏃‍♀️🦵

The iliotibial band (ITB) is a thick band of connective tissue running along the outside of your thigh, from the hip region to the outer knee.

If you’re experiencing pain around the outside of your knee—especially with running—the ITB may be involved. But don’t assume the ITB itself is the whole problem. Hip strength, training load, running mechanics and surrounding tissues can all contribute.

📍 Pain on the outside of your knee?
Come in for an assessment so we can work out what’s actually contributing to it.
