Too many women start IVF without their Day 2 FSH being tested.
Not because it is not important. Because some clinics move too quickly. Dr's assume the protocol will do the heavy lifting, and nobody stops to ask what your hormones are actually doing before the stims begin.
I see this again and again in clinic. Women who have been through multiple cycles. Women who were never informed their FSH were elevated. Women whose IVF protocols were never adjusted accordingly. These women are sitting across from me wondering what went wrong. π
Here's what I want you to understand.
FSH is your brain's recruitment signal. It tells your ovaries to grow follicles. When FSH is already elevated on Day 2, your body is working overtime just to recruit. The moment you add stimulation drugs on top of that signal, you are not getting more eggs. You are often getting fewer, poorer quality, or follicles that stall and arrest or don't produce any eggs. Why? Because your endocrine system and HPO signals were already under strain before your cycle even started.
Elevated FSH also tells us something about estradiol. When FSH is high, estradiol is often low. And estradiol is what the follicle itself produces as it matures. That picture, low estradiol relative to follicular development, reflects the quality of the environment your egg is growing inside.
This is not a scare tactic. It is information you are entitled to have.
Your Day 2 bloods FSH, LH & estradiol are not optional extras. They are your hormonal map. They tell the IVF clinic how to build a protocol that actually fits your bloods, not one that fits a spreadsheet.π‘
If you are preparing for a cycle, or trying to make sense of why a past cycle did not work the way it should have, start with your numbers. Then find a team that knows what to do with them. There is so much we can do with acupuncture and Chinese herbs! We even have a high FSH herbal formula β¨
