In this excerpt, Do Tulku Rinpoche speaks about the destructive force of anger, and how it can take hold before we even realise what is happening.

Rather than waiting until anger has already overwhelmed us, Rinpoche points to the importance of recognising what feeds it: the discomfort, frustration and resistance that arise when things do not go the way we want.

To work with anger, we need to recognise its cause, cut off its fuel, and learn to protect a joyful mind —

Learning the Way Through Body and Mind

“You cannot realize the Buddha’s Way
if you do not aim to practice the Way,
and it will be ever more distant from you
if you do not aim to study it.”
— Zen Master Dōgen

In the 2026 Winter Zen Lectures, Ekai Korematsu Roshi explores Dōgen Zenji’s profound fascicle, Shōbōgenzō Shinjin Gakudō — Learning the Way Through Body and Mind.

Across four 90-minute sessions, participants will examine Dōgen’s teaching that the Buddha Way is realised not through abstract thought alone, but through wholehearted practice expressed in body, mind and everyday activity.

Fridays 3, 10, 17 & 24 July 2026
7:30pm – 9pm

At E-Vam Institute or online via Zoom

In this excerpt, Do Tulku Rinpoche explores the concluding verses of the chapter on Vigilant Introspection from Shantideva’s The Way of the Bodhisattva.

Vigilant introspection is the awareness that guards the mind from carelessness, distraction and harm. In this teaching, Rinpoche reminds us that it is not enough simply to read or understand the instructions: like medicine, the teachings need to be taken up and put into practice.

Having now completed the chapter on Vigilant Introspection, this week Do Tulku Rinpoche begins
Shantideva’s chapter on Patience — making this a wonderful time to join the series.

The chapter on Patience explores how to work skilfully with anger, frustration and the difficulties that arise when we do not get what we want, meet what we do not want, or find our wishes obstructed.

So come what may, I’ll not upset
My cheerful happiness of mind.
Dejection never brings me what I want;
My virtue will be warped and marred by it.

If there’s a remedy when trouble strikes,
What reason is there for dejection?
And if there is no help for it,
What use is there in being glum?

Teachings By Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche IX

The Importance of Positive Thoughts and Our Relationship with Others
This Saturday 16 May

How do our thoughts shape the world we experience? And how do they affect the way we relate to others?

In this session, Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche explores the Buddhist insight that we become what we think — and how negativity and egoic thought can distort our self-image, emotions, speech, actions, and experience of the world.

The teachings explore:
• how actively cultivating positive thoughts and wholesome emotions helps free us from these patterns and opens a clearer, more authentic, and fulfilling way of living
• how loneliness and a “poverty-stricken mentality” keep us looking outside ourselves for fulfilment, yet leave us dissatisfied
• how becoming more enriched within allows relationships to move beyond need, demand, and transaction into something more open and authentic
• how love, compassion, and genuine care open us to real “communication or communion” — and why, as Rinpoche says, “caring for others is what truly ennobles us”

The Meditation & Teachings Series offers an immersive retreat-like day of meditation, reflection, and Buddhist teachings, with meditation practice, audio teachings by Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche IX, and guidance and support for newcomers. Reflection questions are also available to support engagement with the teachings.
