Some hills I’ll die on as a paediatric nurse, educator and mum of four 🤍

Kids don’t need perfect parents. They need present ones.
They need dirt, sunshine, boundaries, cuddles, first aid skills, safe adults and people who trust their instincts.

After years in paediatric critical care, I’ve learnt this:
The little things matter.
The quiet child matters.
The parent gut feeling matters.
Teaching matters.
And the moments on the bathroom floor at 2am, holding a sick child, matter more than most people realise.

Parenting isn’t about perfection.
It’s about showing up, learning, adapting and loving fiercely through the chaos.

What’s a parenting or paediatric “hill you’ll die on”?

Don’t have a sling?
Don’t panic! Keep it simple. The whole point of fracture first aid is to stop them moving it and provide relief from pain- so use whatever you have to do this!

Try these 3 hacks- practice before you need them! Great way to stop them using their arm

A fever can be scary, but the number on the thermometer is only part of the story. What matters most is how your child looks, drinks, breathes, and responds. đź’›

Simple things like fluids, light clothing, rest, and knowing the warning signs can make a huge difference.

The good news? These are skills every parent can learn. 🙌

Learn this and so much more in our Online Infant & Child First Aid Course, now only $45 for a limited time only!

Since we started doing more concentrated first aid training with teens, I’m convinced we need a dictionary, a translator and possibly a full-time interpreter.

Because honestly?

“Bro smoke bombed.”
“She ate concrete.”
“That’s cooked.”
“She’s lush, she’s fine.”
“He’s not giving main character energy.”

Thank goodness for ChatGPT, because I have absolutely done the sneaky side-check of “what does that even mean?” more than once.

Different teens. Same messaging.

No matter what language they use, we still want them to know how to say the important things clearly:

“They’re not responding.”
“They are breathing.”
“There is bleeding.”
“We need help.”
“Call 000.”

Teen slang changes.
First aid basics don’t.

And if we can meet them in their language, have a laugh, and still teach them what to do in an emergency, that’s a win.

Food allergy awareness is not just about teaching adults anymore.

Because preschool age is often the first time our children start eating away from us.
Birthday parties.
Kinder.
Playgroup.
Shared lunches.
Food swaps with friends when nobody is looking for two seconds.

And that is why even young children need simple, age-appropriate education around food allergies.

🥜 Around 1 in 10 Australian babies develop a food allergy in their first year of life.
🏫 By school age, around 1 child in every classroom is living with food allergy.

Our preschoolers do not need to feel frightened.
But they CAN learn:
✨ not to share food
✨ to tell a grown-up if a friend looks unwell
✨ that some foods can make people very sick
✨ that allergies are serious, even if you cannot “see” them

Little conversations create safer classrooms, safer playdates and safer communities.

This food allergy awareness week we highly recommend checking out our friends for more information
kids.co - a fabulous kids book about supporting friends with allergies
