My main focus is gut health, because so much of overall health hinges on having a healthy gut. I help people with a range of gut problems e.g IBS, IND, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea – to name a few. With my ye

ars of experience I am able to help with many health issues, including immune health, autoimmune disease, low energy, fatigue (again, to name a few)
I am a published author - 3 research papers published in professional journals, 2 articles in Canberra enFrancais, and presenter on a range of health topics. As a passionate herbalist most of my patients are prescribed a personalised program of herbs and supplements to support their body while it heals. When I'm not working, I relax by knitting, reading, and gardening. To challenge my brain I am learning the Thai language - spoken and written.

This weekend I'm attending the Integria Symposium Livestream on The Incretin Revolution.
This huge topic relates back to the range of weight loss drugs currently available. The first session was about supporting patients on incretin medications - both nutritionaly and side effects.
Naturopaths like me are ideally placed to support patients taking these drugs.

I've finished my 4 weeks of Thai language class for this year. (my husband and I have been learning Thai for 6 years now) After completing speaking Thai levels 1, 2, 3, and reading writing Thai levels 1, 2, 3 this year we moved on to Pre-intermediate. Everything is more complicated at this level, and the rules around Thai grammar are complex. This was our last piece of homework - we had to read, and understand, the story (it went onto a second page) then answer 10 questions to show that we understood the story.
Learning another language is good for brain health, it helps lay down new pathways in the brain πŸ€“πŸ€“πŸ€“

Balancing meals while living in Thailand for winter
For lunch yesterday we went to a noodle restaurant for Guay Jub soup (rolled rice noodles). The broth is delicious and peppery πŸ˜‹ The meal was a bit of a meatfest for me - lots of sausage, pieces of stewed pork, and roasted pork belly. I balanced this at dinner with a fried egg salad - no meat.
I think it's important to balance what you eat, if you overdo something in a meal, balance it out in a later meal. Eating a perfectly balanced diet every meal is hard, and takes the fun out of eating.
Today we're starting the day with fresh fruit and yogurt - I bought some buffalo milk yogurt the other day, and it's delicious πŸƒπŸ₯›πŸ˜‹ Not sure what we're eating for the rest of the day - so many choices here in Chiang Mai πŸ˜‹πŸ’œ

After spinal surgery in 2024 I could no longer exercise the way I used to, and, sadly, gained 10kg. On the advice of my Neurosurgeon and GP I turned to Ozempic. 10 weeks later I stopped because of increasing digestive problems and a real fear of malnutrition. Around the same time one of my suppliers released a product that worked in a similar way to Ozempic and other weight loss drugs. I've been taking this product daily for around 2 months. My appetite has reduced, and I'm eating less - not so much less that I worry about malnutrition. No digestive problems. Win Win 😁 BTW, my weight has reduced 😁 No scales at our condo in Chiang Mai, but I can report that my clothes are looser 😁

It's the time of year when my partner and I go live in Thailand to escape the cold Canberra winter. While here, all my consultations are via TeleHealth. I've done this the last 2 trips to Thailand, and it works quite well. Book your appointment online as normal. I will send you a link to your Telehealth appointment the day before your appointment.
The photo is of a salted and bbqd river fish, served with sweet chilli sauce (the red one) and a fermented chilli sauce (the green one). The fermented chilli sauce is volcanic 🌢️🌢️🌢️🌢️🌢️ so I've learnt not to overdo it. I get it at the Anusarn Markets, sometimes called the Night Bazarre.

Life is stressful - between day to day living, financial concerns, and balancing work and family it's not surprising you feel stressed. Here are some tips to manage and reduce stress.
+ Take deep breaths: Not only does this force you to breathe slower but it helps your muscles relax. The extra oxygen sends a message to your brain to calm and relax the body.
+ Stretch: Stretching can also help relax your muscles and make you feel less tense. You can take this one step further and dedicate some time to Yoga and/or pilates.
+ Write out your thoughts: it's amazing what a difference writing down the things you are thankful can do to help you handle stress.
+ Take time for yourself: Whether it's reading, getting a massage, or listening to music, self-care is vital.
+ Meditate: Studies show that meditation, a set time of stillness to focus the mind on a positive or neutral thought, can help lower stress.
+ Ensure your diet is suitable: Caffeine or high-sugar snack foods give you jolts of energy that wear off quickly, which in turn, can be detrimental. Foods best for reducing stress are foods which contain Vitamin B, according to research. Studies show that B vitamins can help relieve stress by regulating nerves and brain cells
What’s your go-to stress management option? Mine is a cup of tea and doing some knitting - research has shown that craft activities like knitting and crochet are relaxing.

A lot of people claim to be qualified to help you with your health problems when in reality they have not formal qualification or accrediation.
When choosing a Naturopath ask the following:
- What are their qualifications. These days a person has to complete a Bachelor Degree to be qualified as a Naturopath
- How many years have they been in practice. Naturopaths who have been practicing for more than 10 years may only have an Advanced Diploma as this is all that was required when they were studying. Their years of experience are invaluable.
- Accredited – all correctly qualified Naturopaths are accredited with a peak industry organization eg Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia, Australian Traditional Medicine Society, Australian Register of Naturopaths and Herbalists
- Insured – all accredited Naturopaths are required to have insurance.
If the naturopath you are considering does not tick all these boxes, find one that does.
I am qualified, accredited, and registered as a Naturopath, Nutritionist, and Herbalist. I have over 10 years clinical experience.

Constipation - broad definition is when you poo less than once a day on a regular basis.
I recently attended the Naturopaths'' and Herbalists Association of Australia annual conference where I listened to an excellent presentation on gut health, in particular, constipation. I learnt that there a 4 simple steps to take when you have constipation.
1. Check your fluid intake. You need to drink a minimum of 2 litres of fluid a day (mostly water) to help prevent constipation.
2. Exercise helps with gut motility. Doesn't have to be complicated, walking will suffice. Years ago when I was studying a Tutor explained how walking massages the gut.
3. Fibre. It's recommended that your diet includes between 50 and 100 grams of fibre daily. Pulses and beans are your best friends when it comes to increasing fibre in your diet. So eat these several times a week.
4. Fruit. As well as having lots of vital micronutrients, fresh fruit also contain good amounts of fibre. Aim for 3-5 servers of fruit daily - seasonal is best.
If this doesn't work for you, then book an appointment with me to discuss a prescription for gut stimulating herbs.

You can’t medicate yourself out of a health problem you ate your way into. We lead busy lives that often lead to poor food choices - fast food, pre-prepared meals, ultra-processed foods, skipping meals and snacking instead of eating. Research shows that this type of eating leads to a number of diseases eg metabolic disease, fatigue, poor sleep. There is no magic pill that will fix this.
Choosing to eat a healthy diet that supports your health will often turn your health around. I recommend choosing a mostly plant-based diet that has minimal animal protein that will feed your body and mind, and go towards reversing health issues brought on by an unhealthy diet.
Need help with your eating habits? I am trained in nutrition and have a lot of experience in helping people improve their diet, and by default, their health. Book an appointment with me to discuss how to improve your health through eating.

Back to my original post about the carnivore diet, after doing some research do I think it's good or bad?
From what I have learnt, I think if you want to try a carnivore diet then have some pathology testing done so you can monitor risk factors like increasing LDL cholesterol. Keep a symptom diary from day 1 do you can see when/if symptoms improve. Make a note of negative changes eg constipation, reflux, tiredness.
Put a time limit on your trial - there's still not enough rigorous research to suggest that a carnivore diet is without risks in the long term.
Consult a health care professional who is trained in nutrition - someone like me who is qualified in functional nutrition (as well as naturopathy and herbal medicine)
A huge thank you to my friend who sent my on a learning journey. I like to have my thoughts and opinions challenged, it's what makes me a science nerd 😁
