The Birth Trauma Tree emphasises the diverse root causes of birth trauma, each uniquely experienced by the affected woman or her partner. Whether she encounters one, some, or all of these causes, the key concern is not the specifics but rather the emotional impact and how she perceives her birth experience.

These root causes and subsequent trauma can deepen when the experience is ignored, misdiagnosed, or unsupported. This neglect nurtures the roots of trauma, allowing them to take hold and grow into visible symptoms, which may manifest as PTSD, postnatal depression, or other mental health challenges.

Acknowledging the impact of a traumatic birth is essential.
For those caring for postpartum women, recognising the signs of trauma is crucial. Paying attention to these indicators can make a significant difference in their healing 💜

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫?

A birth comb is a simple, handheld tool that can be used during labour to help manage the intensity of contractions. It can be a sturdy wooden, plastic or acrylic comb, ideally with rounded teeth for comfort.

To use it, place the comb across your palm with the teeth pressing into the fleshy area just below where your fingers meet your hand. As a contraction begins, squeeze the comb at a pressure that feels comfortable for you, then release as the contraction eases ✨

How does it work?
One explanation is the Gate Control Theory of Pain. The pressure created by the comb gives your nervous system another strong sensation to focus on, which may help interfere with pain signals travelling to the brain and reduce the perception of discomfort.
The comb may also stimulate acupressure points in the hand, including the Lao Gong (Pericardium 8) point, located in the palm.

Why use a birth comb?
A birth comb is a drug free, non-invasive comfort measure that can provide distraction and give you something practical to focus on during contractions. Having something you can actively squeeze may also help create a greater sense of focus and control.

It is inexpensive, portable and takes up very little room in your birth bag.

A few tips:
* Practise using your comb before labour so you can find the position and pressure that feel most comfortable.
* A birth comb can also be used alongside other comfort measures, including breathing techniques, movement, massage, meditation and relaxation. It can also be used alongside medical pain relief if needed.
* A birth comb won't eliminate labour pain completely, and everyone will experience it differently. However, for some people, it can be a simple and helpful addition to their labour toolkit.

As with any comfort measure, listen to your body. If it feels helpful, continue using it. If it doesn't, you can simply put it aside and try something else 💜
