Bringing a new baby into the world is an incredible experience, but many women are surprised by the emotional ups and downs that can follow birth. These feelings, commonly known as the baby blues, are a normal part of the postnatal adjustment and affect up to 80 per cent of women.

The baby blues usually begin around three to five days after birth and can last for up to two weeks.

Although these feelings can be distressing, they are usually temporary and improve as your body adjusts after birth.

One of the main causes is the significant hormonal shift that occurs after birth.
During pregnancy, levels of oestrogen and progesterone are extremely high. Once the placenta is born, these hormone levels drop rapidly. This sudden change can affect mood, emotions and overall wellbeing.
At the same time, your body is recovering from pregnancy and birth while adapting to caring for a newborn.

The early days with a newborn often involve interrupted sleep, physical recovery and learning how to care for your baby.
Sleep deprivation alone can have a significant impact on mood and emotional resilience, making normal daily challenges feel much harder to manage.

For women who breastfeed, another hormonal shift takes place.
Levels of prolactin increase to support milk production, while oxytocin helps with milk let-down and bonding with your baby.
As your milk comes in, usually around days three to five, your breasts may feel full and uncomfortable. This often occurs at the same time the baby blues are at their peak, which can make emotions feel more intense.
As feeding becomes established and hormones begin to settle, many women notice an improvement in both their physical comfort and emotional wellbeing.

The baby blues can last for up to two weeks after birth. If your symptoms continue beyond two weeks, or if feelings of sadness, anxiety or overwhelm are becoming more intense, we recommend contacting your midwife, GP or primary healthcare provider for further support and assessment โจ

The baby blues are a common and normal response to the enormous physical, hormonal and emotional changes that occur after birth. Be kind to yourself, accept support when it is offered and remember that this stage is temporary. With time, rest and support, most women find these feelings gradually pass as they settle into life with their baby ๐ถ๐ป
