This month is Aphasia Awareness Month. Aphasia is a condition that affects how a person speaks, understands, reads, or writes. It often occurs after a stroke or brain injury.

It doesn’t affect intelligence, but it can make finding words, following conversations, or expressing thoughts really challenging.

Let’s spread awareness, kindness, and understanding this month. ❤️

Dysgraphia is a learning difference that makes writing challenging for some children. It can affect handwriting, spelling, and organising thoughts on paper. ✏️

If your child struggles with handwriting, you can try these strategies…

•Using pencil grips.
•Increase the amount of time they have to complete written tasks.
•Use visual aids like dotted third lines (e.g. sky, dirt, grass paper).
•Use talk to text apps and programs.
•Provide feedback about written tasks privately and positively💛

One of our favourite quotes about how play is learning for children! 🛝

“For a small child there is no division between playing and learning! A child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable is also play.” - Penelope Leach. 🎨 🧠

This week is National Reconciliation Week 🖤💛❤️

It is a time to reflect, learn, and take meaningful steps towards reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

This week encourages us to think about how we can build stronger relationships, show respect, and contribute to a more inclusive future for the next generation.

May is NF1 Awareness Month.
To raise awareness, we encourage you to wear a dash of green or blue this month! 💙

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is a genetic condition that can affect many areas of development. For some children, this may include differences in learning, attention, motor skills, speech, and language development.

Join us in recognising and raising awareness for individuals living with NF1. 💙

As we move towards the middle of the year, it’s common for our cups to feel a little empty 💛

Sometimes a few simple sensory supports can help children reset and regulate at home. Things like weighted toys, blowing bubbles, visual timers, fidget tools, or a quiet sensory space can help our children focus and regulate emotionally.

Small supports can make a big difference. ✨

💨 Here at the Speech Co we know that strong lips = healthy oral habits!

Swipe across to see some of our favourite fun blowing exercises to help develop a solid lip seal, encourage nasal breathing, and make nose-blowing easier. Try:

🎈 Blowing a pinwheel or balloons.
🫧 Blowing bubbles.
🪄 Having a blowing match with a straw and some paper!

Little daily practice builds the foundation for clear speech and better breathing! 👄✨

🎲 Turn-taking games are more than just fun!

Games like Uno, Connect Four, Jenga, or Snakes & Ladders give kids a chance to practice waiting their turn, following rules, and teaches them how to win and lose.

Every turn helps build patience, self-control, and problem-solving skills, while also supporting language development as kids talk and negotiate during play. ✨

In honour of Apraxia Awareness month we are sharing some myths about CAS.
There’s a lot of misunderstanding about Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Let’s clear it up:

Myth 1: “They just need to try harder.” ❌
✅ CAS is a motor planning disorder, not a lack of effort.

Myth 2: “They’ll outgrow it.” ❌
✅ Early, consistent therapy is essential for progress.

Myth 3: “It’s caused by hearing or intelligence issues.” ❌
✅ CAS can occur in children of any intelligence level, and hearing is usually normal.

💬 Understanding CAS helps us give children the support and confidence they need to communicate successfully.
