Imagine the difference we can make when our clients feel heard, understood, and safe. This is significant when supporting q***r refugees. With the right knowledge, we can help deliver safer services for LGBTQIA+ migrants and refugees.

The Language Justice Network (LJN) was created to help meet the need for safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed communication. Based in Melbourne, LJN is a community-run non-profit that provides safe language services, training, and job opportunities for q***r refugees across Australia.

Sign up for our free 30-minute webinar, ‘Q***r refugees exist: introducing the Language Justice Network’, to gain practical knowledge, and help create a welcoming, justice-focused environment for q***r refugees.

Navigating pregnancy and the first months of parenthood away from home, family, and the support networks people have always known, can be a challenge. CEH is pleased to support "Nascere Down Under, diventare genitori in Australia" (Born Down Under: Becoming a Parent in Australia) created by SBS radio producer and journalist Francesca Rizzoli, to help Italian-spakers through this time.

Through personal stories, practical information, and advice from experts, this four-episode podcast guides listeners on a journey from the first trimester of pregnancy to the first months with a newborn in their arms. An Italian perspective on the experience of becoming a parent within Australia's healthcare and social systems.

Understanding mental health and the services available in Victoria can sometimes feel confusing, especially when information is not in your preferred language.

Introducing the Bilingual Mental Health Services Glossary (https://refugeehealthnetwork.org.au/project/mental-health-bilingual-glossary/), now available in 17 languages: Arabic, Assyrian, Burmese, Dari, English, Dinka, Farsi, Hakha Chin, Karen, Khmer, Pashto, Rohingya, Swahili, Tamil, Tigrinya, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

This glossary provides plain language explanations of commonly used mental health terms, helping to bridge communication gaps and to support shared understanding between practitioners, interpreters, and clients. It can be used as a reference before, during, or after sessions, and will support more confident and effective communication for everyone involved.

This glossary is the product of a collaboration between the Centre for Culture, Equity & Health (CEH) and the Victorian Refugee Health Network, with support from the Victorian Government.

Bird flu alert – now available in 13 languages.

H5N1 avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has been detected in a wild bird in Victoria. It spreads easily between birds, but the current risk to people is low, with no locally acquired human cases reported in Australia.

See sick or dead birds/animals? Don't touch them — report to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888.

The Health Translations library has a bird flu resource available in 13 languages to help you share this information with your community:

Q***r refugees exist: introducing the Language Justice Network

This August, ahead of Wear it Purple Day, we're teaming up with the Language Justice Network for a lunchtime webinar. We'll explore how we can better support q***r refugees, with a focus on people who need language services. Together, we'll look at what safety means, the supports available, and how to work effectively with interpreters.

We'd love to have you join us!

If you are interested in the use of AI scribes in healthcare settings, you will want to read 'Off the Record – AI Scribes in Australian Healthcare'. For this discussion paper, Digital Rights Watch interviewed GPs, patient advocates, people with disability and organisations representing women, refugees and youth to outline potential harms and opportunities for regulation.

CEH is pleased to have contributed to this consultation. While we understand the opportunity AI scribes represent, we want to highlight the importance of ensuring they are suitable for patients who speak with an accent or require an interpreter - it's a health equity issue.
