The number one thing people tell me when they first see the Calm mode recipe list?

“I had no idea I could eat like this.”

Most people with SIBO land on a very narrow diet and assume that is what Calm mode means. Plain food. Boring food. Sad food.

That is not what this is.

Yesterday, on Calm mode, I had Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict on Zucchini Pancakes for breakfast. Hearty Beef Soup for lunch. Pan Fried Snapper With Lemon Potatoes for dinner. A scoop of Berry Sorbet for dessert, and Beetroot, Carrot and Parsnip Chips for a snack

Calm mode is short-term and used when your symptoms are moderate to severe and in conjunction with your treatment protocol. It is not boring or plain because your food should be delicious and exciting no matter what point of your recovery you are currently in.

Most people with SIBO are never told what to do after the restricted diet. So they stay on it. For months. Sometimes years. Eating less and less, cutting out more and more, and quietly losing hope that normal eating is ever coming back.

That’s not a failure on your part. You were never given the next step.

I’ve just come back from the most amazing girls holiday in Thailand with some of my closest friends, and it reminded me of something I feel so strongly about.

SIBO should not stop you from living your life.

It should not stop you from travelling, saying yes to the holiday, eating out with your friends, swimming in the ocean, exploring a new country, or creating beautiful memories.

But I also know that travelling with SIBO can feel really daunting.

Look away if you’re hungry! We had some fantastic meals while in Thailand. Here’s a small sample of them. The standouts were:

Koh Samui:
for dinner with a view (I had the soft shell crab and it was insanely good)
for the most delicious coconut ice cream iced coffee and spring roll Buddha bowlthaifood.samui for seriously delicious and authentic Thai food in Fisherman’s Villagesamui for the best pad Thai we ate all holiday (and we ate a lot!)
for sunset drinks and a really delicious dinner

Koh Phangan:
for all meals and sunset drinksbakerydeli for the best coconut latte and brunch (we went daily and loved the staff just as much as the food)
Fisherman’s Restaurant for the most insane larb and betal leaves and delicious seafood platter (so good we went twice)
for sunset drinks (but be warned… they make STRONG drinks! 🥴)

Take me back to for just a day. What a wonderful island escape we had. Aside from the amazing weather, yummy food, beach side pool and villa, it was the owners and staff who made it such an unforgettable holiday. It felt like coming to see good friends and we were truly sad to say goodbye to all of them at the end of our stay.

A little update on how my gut is going 5 day into my Thailand holiday and the changes I’m making today to help support it.

How good does this Thai fruit look? The colour, taste, diversity and price (aka cheap!) make it all so amazing. Plus fruit has so many health benefits, with mango and red dragon fruit being particularly helpful for improving gut transit time and reducing constipation.

If you can’t get fresh red dragon fruit where you live, did you know you can buy it in powder form and add it to smoothies for a great boost? It’s what I often do for myself and when I’m helping my clients expand their diet and bring some exciting new foods into their weekly routine (all the while feeding their gut microbiota).

After much planning, thinking and day dreaming, I’m finally off on a girls trip to Thailand! My great friends and are with me and we’re going to be enjoying ALLLL the amazing Thai food, weather, beaches and more that Thailand has on offer. It’s my first travel without the kids (who are loving life with hubby and doing lots of daddy adventures). I’m here for 2.5 weeks and can’t wait to really relax into the much slower pace that island life affords.
Here’s a little glimpse into the first 2 days of our trip.
