Blood sugar balance is important for more than just stable energy and reduced cravings. It’s essential for your hormones, your mental health, your immune system and your long term metabolic health, amongst many other things.

Fortunately you can support your blood sugar balance with a few simple swaps at the supermarket.

The REAL cause of your sugar cravings.
If you feel like you’re constantly craving sugar, it’s not because you lack willpower. It’s because your body is asking for something.
Cravings are often painted as something to “control” or “push through”, but from a physiological perspective, they’re actually a form of communication.
Your body is incredibly intelligent. When it needs quick energy, it will find a way to get your attention.
One of the most common drivers I see clinically is blood sugar instability.
When your blood sugar rises quickly (for example, from a high carbohydrate meal without enough protein or fat), it often drops just as quickly.
And that drop? That’s perceived by your body as a stress signal.
So it responds by increasing cortisol, driving hunger and creating strong cravings for quick sugar
That’s just one cause though.
Cravings can also be driven by undereating earlier in the day (especially protein), poor sleep (which alters hunger hormones), nervous system overactivity/stress (“wired but tired”), imbalances in the gut microbiome, just to name a few.
This is why simply trying to “cut sugar” or rely on discipline often doesn’t work long-term. You’re trying to override biology and ignore what your body is trying to tell you.
A more helpful question to ask when it comes to cravings is: What is my body trying to tell me?
When you start to support your body, by eating enough, balancing your meals, supporting sleep, and addressing underlying imbalances, those cravings often become quieter and much easier to navigate.
Your body isn’t working against you. It’s trying to keep you safe.
And cravings are just one of the ways it communicates that.

When people think about blood sugar, they usually think about one thing: sugar.

But your body isn’t just responding to what you eat — it’s responding to stress.

And here’s the part most people don’t realise:
👉 Stress isn’t just emotional.

Your body perceives many everyday inputs as stress, including:

• Undereating or skipping meals
• Overeating or large spikes in food intake
• Eating carbs without enough protein or fat
• Poor sleep
• Overtraining
• Mental or emotional stress

From a physiological perspective, these all send the same message:
“We need energy — now.”

So your body responds the only way it knows how:
⬆️ It releases cortisol
⬆️ It raises blood sugar

Because blood sugar = fast, accessible fuel for survival.

This is incredibly helpful in short bursts.
But when it’s happening on repeat throughout the day?

That’s when you start to notice:

• Energy crashes
• Sugar cravings
• Feeling wired but tired
• Increased hunger
• Difficulty losing weight

Over time, this constant demand for energy can contribute to:

• Insulin resistance
• Hormone imbalances
• Thyroid downregulation
• Increased fat storage (especially around the abdomen)
👉 Even if you feel like you’re “doing everything right” with your food.

This is why blood sugar balance isn’t just about what you eat.
It’s about the state your body is in when you eat — and how supported your system feels overall.

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s safety.

Simple places to start:
1. Eat enough (especially protein)
2. Build balanced meals (not just carbs on their own)
3. Support your sleep
4. Reduce unnecessary stress on your body

Because your body isn’t trying to work against you — it’s trying to keep you alive.

And when you support it, everything starts to feel a whole lot easier.

The health of your gut necessitates dietary diversity.
Different microbes require different types of fibre, polyphenols and nutrients to thrive.
Eliminating entire food groups reduces the variety of substrates that your microbiome needs to stay resilient. This reduces diversity in your microbiome, and has negative consequences for disease prevention and longevity.
Any short term benefits that are seen from restrictive diets (e.g. reduced inflammation, improved metabolic markers, etc) are not seen in the long run. Rather, gut health becomes compromised and as a result, so does overall health.
The key is eating as diverse a diet as possible to maintain diversity in your gut microbiome. This will help to protect you against disease and extend both your healthspan and your lifespan.

Summer Fruit Cake
This cake is one of my favourite summer cakes: a simple vanilla batter bursting with juicy sweet summer fruit.
It takes less than half an hour to whip up and is always a crowd pleaser.

Ingredients:
175g butter (sub coconut oil for DF)
3/4 - 1 cup coconut sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup sour cream
1 cup almond meal/flour
3/4 cup spelt flour (sub buckwheat flour for GF)
1.5 tsp baking powder
1 cup blueberries
1 cup raspberries
2 peaches, stones removed and sliced
Icing sugar, to dust (optional)
______________________
Method:
Preheat oven to 180 C. Grease and line a 23cm round springform cake tin.
In a bowl, beat butter, sugar and vanilla until pale and creamy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the sour cream.
Using a spatula or wooden spoon, fold in the ground almonds, flour, and baking powder.
Spread half of the mixture evenly into the tin and top with half of the fruit - you do not need to press it in. Spread over the remaining mixture and arrange the rest of the fruit on top.
Bake for 45-55 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean.
Let cake cool in tin for at least 30 min before removing. Dust with icing sugar to serve (optional).
Store left overs in the fridge in hot weather.
Enjoy!

Did you love my last post of simple supermarket swaps for improved gut health and want to know more?

Many everyday supermarket foods contain ingredients that can disrupt gut health — things like emulsifiers, phytates, lectins, oxalates and highly processed oils. Over time, these can contribute to gut irritation, imbalance in the microbiome and digestive symptoms.

The good news? Supporting your gut doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple swaps, you can choose options that are more gut-friendly — and they’re often found right next to the originals in the same supermarket aisle.

I’ve put together another 6 supermarket swaps to help support digestion and overall gut health next time you’re shopping.
