The Country Witch's Cottage

The Country Witch's Cottage Old World Hedgewitchery and Folk Magic Crafts Welcome to the Country Witch's Cottage. Old world Hedgewitchery and Folk Magic Crafts live here. I heal and I hex.

This is a place for the wild souls, the healers, the poisoners, the spirits and the witches who love to run through the woods and dance in the rain. I am a herbalist, writer and witch. I am a wortcunner and wisewoman. I work with herbs crafting potion and lotions, oils and salves. I craft with wood and stone, paper and wax, I read tarot and oracle to divine the future. I am a hedge witch, walking

the twisted green roads within and without the boundaries of what is seen and what is not; using and growing the shamanistic plants of old, embracing baneful herbs as well as healing herbs. My nature as both witch and herbalist demand it. My products are handcrafted, using organic or wildcrafted herbs. I run two stores, both centre around my passion and love for herbs. I love to create unique artisan items letting spirit guide me toward the creative process. I do not make any claims of expertise or secret knowledge. I simply walk the twisted roads, exploring the path, experiencing the journey of the wild and green, learning as I go, adapting as I change and growing as I practice.

Interesting read, and very true. Witchcraft has become aesthetics and algorithm chasing without much substance on social media these days. There is so much lore and learning that gets missed and it's sad to see.

Let's talk about how absofu***nglutely useless some of these "witchy tip" posts are?

I just saw one recently that said:

"Place a pair of open scissors under your bed to avoid any kind of negativity that may come while you are asleep. This way, you are avoiding negative energy, nightmares, and even spiritual attacks by other Witches or entities."

That's it.
No explanation.
No symbolism.
No tradition cited.
No details.

Just "put scissors under your bed."

Now, if we're talking about actual folk magic, traditional witchcraft, cunning craft, or historical magical practices, details matter.

What kind of scissors?
Iron scissors?
Steel scissors?
Plastic safety scissors from the dollar store?
Do the handles matter?

Does the color matter?
Do they need to be black for protection? Red for power? White for purification? Are we using Western color charts?

Do they need to be sharp?
Do dull scissors still work?
Do they need to be open at a specific angle?
Do the blades point toward the door?
Away from the bed?
North?
South?

Do they need to be blessed?
Cleansed?
Charged?

Used only by you?
Do they go under the head of the bed or the foot of the bed?

And perhaps my favorite question:

If these magical scissors are supposedly cutting negative energy, what exactly stops them from cutting positive energy too?

Because the post certainly doesn't explain that.

Traditional magical systems usually have symbolic logic behind them. Whether you personally believe in magic or not, there is often a reason for the objects being used.

Iron was historically believed in many cultures to repel harmful spirits and supernatural beings.

Sharp objects were sometimes used as protective charms because they symbolically severed curses, harmful influences, or malicious intentions.

Open scissors could represent a ward, a barrier, or a protective crossroads.

See? That's already more explanation than the entire post gave.

Instead, modern social media witchcraft often takes centuries of folklore, strips away all the context, removes the symbolism, removes the cultural background, removes the reasoning, and leaves us with:

"Scissors stop bad vibes."

Thanks. Very fu***ng informative.

At that point, you're not teaching folk magic.
You're not teaching witchcraft. You're not even teaching symbolism.

You're sharing a magical life hack with less explanation than the instructions on a damn microwave burrito.

And can we also acknowledge that telling people to put OPEN SCISSORS under their bed without so much as a safety disclaimer is absolutely wild?

If you're going to present a magical practice, explain the symbolism at minimum. Give the reader some understanding of WHY the f**k they are doing it.

Even better explain the history. Explain the reasoning.

Because if your entire system falls apart the moment someone asks, "Why scissors?" then maybe you don't actually have a system.

You have an aesthetic.

The Oak is forming new buds, even as the leaves still remain. This is the perfect example of the strange-ness of weather we've had this year. It's season confusion - but she is changing colour so I think the Oak will be bare by next month.

I have slowly started working on new products in the shop (energy allowing) and I have more planned to come soon. I've done two Sweet Jar Spell Kits, one money and one love. They both have a few more ingredients in them than the regular spell jar kits making them a more involved working. As with all my kits, both come with detailed printed instructions.

Autumn has finally come.....two weeks before winter starts. The Oak is only now just starting to change colour, some of the fruit trees still have theirs. It has been a bizarre couple of months weather wise - we had a mini Spring that confused the trees, the plants, the wildlife but I think everything is starting to find its rhythm now.

Hello All, I just thought I would pop up a quick note about the stock levels of herbs instore. Unfortunately my suppliers have not got a restock date for quite a few of the herbs I normally have such as Birch, Sacred Lotus, Motherwort (to name a few). I am working on the assumption - although it has not been expressly said - that the issues currently happening in the Middle East are interrupting supply chains because prior to the start of March, quite a few of the herbs had restock dates in late March or early April. Hopefully that changes soon but I'll just have to take each day as it comes and see where it ends up.

A non-aesthetically pleasing pile up of veg harvested from my garden today (special guest Thistle meadery mead in the background đŸ˜‚). The chillies are doing really well so I foresee a lot of dehydrating this week.
