You regularly use SPF on your face, but what about your lips? 👄

Lips have very little built-in UV protection, and the lower lip is a common site for sun-related damage and skin cancer. The good news is that actinic cheilitis is highly treatable, as are other skin cancers of the lip when detected early, which means simpler treatment and better outcomes.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for approximately 80% to 90% of visible, premature skin aging, otherwise known as photoaging.

UV rays break down essential structural proteins like collagen and elastin, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of firmness.

Pigmentation irregularities (like sunspots and freckles) show a direct link to UV exposure, whereas natural chronological aging contributes more heavily to tissue sagging (ptosis).

We achieved a great result for this patient by removing an unwanted patch of pigmentation (lentigos) with our Picoway laser, in just three sessions!

With summer fast approaching, UV exposure and hot climates can contribute to more obvious pigmentation and melasma. Our recommended approach is to start your treatment plan in the cooler months, and maintain regular use of tinted SPF.

A new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) highlights just how widespread non-melanoma skin cancer is across the country.

According to the report, roughly 535,000 Australians, about 2% of the population, have at least one common non-melanoma skin cancer removed each year. For context, melanoma diagnoses totalled around 15,000 in 2021, while all other cancer types combined accounted for about 154,000 diagnoses that same year.

These figures reinforce that common non-melanoma skin cancers occur roughly three times as often as every other type of cancer put together.
