Rockhampton Robotic Joint Surgery

Was great to get together with some of Australia's most experienced robotic total hip replacement surgeons the other night at Strykers Mako Total Hip users meeting.
A major discussion point was the use of the newly available Virtual Range Of Motion (VROM) technology to reduce dislocation in THR surgery. The VROM allows surgeons to put the patients hip through a (virtual) range of motion on the computer planning software prior to surgery to assess if and when the hip might impinge, as hip impingement can lead to dislocation. The position of the prosthesis can then be adjusted to prevent the impingement and thus prevent dislocation. This adjustment is incorporated into the patients surgical plan and executed with precision, further reducing dislocation risk.
I routinely use this VROM technology in all Mako robotic Total Hip Replacements performed at Hillcrest Rockhampton Hospital.

Brilliant interview from Prof Richard Field, a pioneer of Anterior Hip replacement surgery that I had the pleasure of learning from years ago!! A great summary of the benefits of Anterior approach hip replacement surgery!
Interesting to note he has also transitioned to using the Mako robot for his surgery now!

Recent study comparing Anterior and Posterior approach Total Hip Replacement (THR) shows significantly lower dislocation rate in the Anterior approach group

Both DAA and PA yield good results at the final follow-up in terms of function, quality of life, and survivorship. However dislocation was significantly higher in PA group.
