The parents doing the hardest work are often the ones who feel like they're failing.

You're here. You're reading this. You're trying to understand your kid's brain, stay calm when they can't, hold limits with kindness, and repair when things go wrong.

That's not failing. That's exactly the work.

If you'd like more support — whether that's the weekly ADHD parent group ($25, drop-in, no lock-in) or individual sessions for your child or family — I'd love to hear from you.

If your child had a meltdown today, take a deep breath.

Big emotions are part of healthy development. Children aren't born knowing how to regulate their feelings—they learn through calm, connected adults who guide them with patience.

Parenting isn't about getting everything right—it's about noticing the little things that help your child feel safe and supported.

Small changes, made consistently, can lead to calmer days and more confident kids.

Sometimes the most powerful response isn't fixing the problem—it's helping your child feel understood.

Simple words like "That sounds tricky" can help your child feel safe while you calmly hold the boundary.

Something I want to say to every parent I work with:

You are going to lose it sometimes. You're going to say the wrong thing, react too fast, come down off the deck and get swept up in the wave.

That is human. That is parenting.

What matters is the repair.

'I shouldn't have handled that the way I did. I'm going to try better next time.'

That's it. No big production. Just honest and simple.

Repair teaches your child that relationship survives rupture. That is one of the most important things they can ever learn.

You don't have to be perfect. You just have to keep coming back.

There's a sequence that works when things go sideways. It's simple but the order matters:

Regulate first. Help the nervous system settle before anything else. Your calm, your presence, not many words.

Relate second. Once the storm has passed — reconnect. 'That was hard. I'm here.' Not analysing. Just being in it together.

Reason last. When the thinking brain is back online — when they're calm, they can hear you — that's when conversation is possible. Consequences, problem-solving, talking about what happened.

In that order. Every time.

If you try to reason during the storm, you're talking to a door that's closed. Wait for it to open.

Routine. The word that somehow makes kids act like you've personally ruined their day.

"Time to get ready..."
Cue the meltdown.

But here's the thing: kids who struggle with regulation often need structure more than anyone else.

A predictable after-school routine. Dinner at the same time. A simple visual schedule.

It doesn't have to be perfect or complicated. It just needs to be consistent.

Routine doesn't restrict kids—it helps them feel safe, calm, and ready to handle the day.

What's one routine that has made life a little easier in your home?
