❓What is Exercise Physiology?
✅Exercise Physiologists, or EPs, are a branch of allied health professionals that use exercise to manage musculoskeletal conditions, chronic disease, prevent and manage injuries as well as improve athletic
performance.
❓What is the difference between an EP and a Physio?
✅While both professionals help you move better, their focus differs. Physiotherapists are professionals in diagnosis, injury management, and reducing pain through hands-on treatment (manual therapy) and early-stage rehab, this may include exercise.
Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) specialise in the prescription of exercise to manage chronic conditions, improve long-term functional capacity, prevent injury recurrence and improve sport performance. The advantage of being a part of a multidisciplinary team is that clinicians across different disciplines of allied health work together to ensure you get the right care at the right stage of your recovery or health journey.
❓Do You Need a Physiotherapist or an Exercise Physiologist?
✅See a Physiotherapist if:
You have a new injury, are in acute pain, require a diagnosis, or need “hands-on” manual treatment to restore movement.
✅See an Exercise Physiologist if:
You have a chronic condition (diabetes, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis), are recovering from a long-term injury, or need a structured gym-based program to improve strength and capacity or want to improve sporting performance.
