Our Christmas Pet Photos will be returning to Splendiferous, once again raising much-needed funds for Capricorn Animal Aid! 🐾💕
BUTTTTTT... we have a little problem we need your help with! 😂

Last year we had our Santa suit hire donated but unfortunately that isn't happening this year.
SOOOOO... WE NEED A SANTA SUIT!!! 🎅

We're putting the call out to our wonderful community to see if anyone has a Santa suit tucked away somewhere that we could borrow for the day!

Now, as you can imagine, there's quite a bit of work that goes into putting something like this together. Here at Splendiferous, we donate all our time to organising the event, setting everything up on the website, managing bookings, advertising and promoting it, plus hosting, setting up and facilitating the actual day.

We do all of this voluntarily because we want to help raise as much money as possible for the animals who need it. ❤️

So, while we'd love to just go out and buy or hire a Santa suit, it's another expense that we really can't justify when we're already donating so much time and resources to making this fundraiser happen.

That's where we're hoping someone in our fabulous community might be able to help us out! 🙏🎅

🌿 THE APOTHECARY – Smoke Cleansing 🌿

More Than Just Burning Herbs

Smoke cleansing is the practice of burning herbs, woods, resins or incense and using the smoke with the intention of energetically cleansing a person, object or space. While it is not technically something that has traditionally been a major part of witchcraft and there is surprisingly little historical information connecting the modern practice directly with witchcraft, it has certainly found its place within the craft — particularly in more recent times.

The use of smoke for purification and spiritual purposes itself is far from new. Cultures throughout the world have burned aromatic plants, woods and resins for thousands of years for cleansing, protection, blessing, ceremony and spiritual practice. What has evolved within modern witchcraft is the way these ideas are incorporated into personal magical practice, often using herbs and resins selected for their individual magical associations.

Today, smoke cleansing is commonly used before ritual or spellwork, after difficult or heavy situations, when moving into a new home, or simply when a space feels as though it needs an energetic reset. It can also be used to cleanse ritual tools, crystals and altar items, with the ingredients chosen according to the particular intention of the working.

🌿 Smoke Cleansing or Smudging?
The word “smudging” is commonly used today to describe almost any practice involving burning herbs for cleansing, but technically this is not what the term means.

Smudging refers to specific sacred ceremonial practices belonging to a number of Indigenous peoples of the Americas. These traditions have their own teachings, protocols and sacred medicines and are culturally distinct from the general practice of burning herbs or resins for energetic cleansing.

For this reason, when we are talking about the practice commonly used within witchcraft — burning herbs, woods, incense or resins and moving the smoke throughout a space — we prefer the term smoke cleansing.

🌿 Tips From Our Apothecary
There is no single ingredient that you have to use for smoke cleansing. Different herbs, woods and resins carry different traditional associations, so think about the purpose of your cleansing before choosing what to burn.

Rosemary, lavender, garden sage, palo santo, frankincense, myrrh and many other herbs and resins can all be incorporated depending on your intention. Loose ingredients can also be combined into your own blend and burned on a charcoal disc in a heat-safe cauldron, allowing you to create something specifically suited to cleansing, protection, peace, release or whatever you are working towards.

And remember — smoke cleansing does not have to be complicated. Your intention, the ingredients you choose and the purpose behind what you are doing are far more important than simply following a trend.

As we move towards the end of October, it's time to celebrate Beltane here in the Southern Hemisphere! 🌿✨

And this will be our final Sabbat gathering for 2026, as we don't hold a public gathering for Litha (Summer Solstice). So if you've been meaning to join us for one of our Sabbat celebrations, this is your last chance for the year!

While much of the Northern Hemisphere is preparing for Samhain and Halloween, here we're celebrating something quite different — the beauty of spring, the approaching summer and the abundance of life!

🔮 THE APOTHECARY – Consecrating 🔮

More Than Just Cleansing Your Tools

Consecrating is the act of intentionally dedicating an object to a particular purpose within your magical or spiritual practice. It can be performed when bringing a new ritual tool into your practice, when beginning to work with something that has previously belonged to someone else or simply when you want to establish a deeper connection between yourself, the object and the work you intend to do with it.

Athames, wands, pentacles, chalices, divination tools, jewellery, altar pieces and other ritual objects can all be consecrated. An object doesn't need to be expensive, elaborate or traditionally considered a witchcraft tool either. If something has a meaningful purpose within your practice, you may choose to consecrate it.

One of the easiest ways to understand consecration is to separate three practices that are often grouped together: cleansing clears, consecrating dedicates and charging empowers. Cleansing is generally performed first to clear energy the object may have accumulated through making, handling, transport, previous ownership or use. Consecration then establishes the purpose the object will hold within your practice, while charging is the act of intentionally directing energy into it.

🌿 How Is Something Consecrated?
There is no single correct method. Consecration can be as simple as cleansing an object, holding it in your hands and clearly stating the purpose you are dedicating it to. For others, it may become a complete ritual involving an altar, candles, herbs, incense, oils or a sacred circle.

The four elements can also be incorporated into a consecration. Earth may be represented by salt, soil or herbs; Air by incense or smoke; Fire by a candle; and Water by a bowl or chalice of water. The tool may be presented to each of the elements before being formally dedicated to its intended purpose.

The method should always suit the object. Not everything should be placed in water, covered in salt, anointed with oil or passed near a flame. Smoke, sound or simply focused intention may be much more appropriate for delicate items.

🌿 Building a Connection
Consecration doesn't necessarily begin and end with one ritual. Spending time with a magical tool can also help establish a personal connection with it. You might meditate while holding it, keep it on your altar, practise using it, carry it with you when appropriate or simply become familiar with how it feels within your workings.

Over time, frequently used tools can become deeply personal parts of a practitioner's craft, carrying the connection and intention that has been built through continued use.

🌿 Tips From Our Apothecary
You don't necessarily need to consecrate every magical item you own. Some practitioners consecrate their major ritual tools when they first begin working with them, while others choose to repeat the process when they feel a tool needs renewing or rededicating. Something that has been stored away for a long time, passed on from another person or given an entirely new purpose may be cleansed and consecrated again before being brought back into practice.

Most importantly, consecration is about purpose and intention. It is the conscious act of taking an ordinary object or ritual tool and dedicating it to the role it will hold within your own magical practice.
