Exercise Physiology Week is a great opportunity to recognise the vital role Accredited Exercise Physiologists (EPs) play in improving health, function, and quality of life across all ages and abilities.
Exercise Physiology is more than “exercise prescription.” EPs are allied health professionals who use movement as medicine - designing safe, evidence-based exercise interventions to manage chronic disease, support rehabilitation, improve mental health, and enhance long-term wellbeing.
For adults, EPs often work in the prevention and management of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer recovery, and musculoskeletal injuries. They help people regain strength, improve mobility, reduce pain, and build sustainable habits that support independence and confidence in daily life.
For children and adolescents, EPs support healthy development through improving motor skills, coordination, and physical literacy. They may work with young people living with developmental delays, obesity, autism spectrum disorder, or chronic conditions like asthma. The focus is always on building positive movement experiences early, helping children feel capable and confident in their bodies.
For participants supported through the NDIS, EPs play an important role in functional capacity building. This can include improving balance, strength, and endurance, but also targeting meaningful life outcomes - like being able to transfer safely, participate in community activities, or increase independence with daily tasks. Programs are highly individualised and designed around participant goals, not just clinical measures.
Across all populations, EPs bridge the gap between clinical care and everyday function. They work collaboratively with GPs, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other health professionals to ensure exercise is safe, accessible, and tailored to each person’s needs.
This week, we also want to acknowledge and sincerely thank our Exercise Physiologist, Michele, for the expertise, care, and consistency she brings to her work.
Happy Exercise Physiology Week to all EPs...and especially to Michele.
