Have you ever wondered why your child can explain what to do, but finds it difficult to actually do it?

This is where executive functioning comes in.

Executive functioning refers to a group of skills that help us manage ourselves and our actions. These skills support children to participate in everyday activities like getting ready for school, completing tasks, playing with others and managing challenges.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore some of the key executive functioning and how they show up in everyday life.

Better sleep starts with small, consistent habits.

Sleep isn’t just about what happens at bedtime, daytime movement, natural light, screen-free rest time, calming routines and a sensory friendly sleep environment all play an important role.

While these positive sleep practices can support healthy sleep habits, some children experience underlying sleep disorders or medical conditions that require further assessment and more targeted strategies.

Every child is different, so focus on finding what works best for your family 💙

Sleep is influenced by so much more than bedtime routines 🌙

A child’s emotions, sensory needs, health, daily routines and environment can all impact their ability to settle, sleep and wake feeling rested.

Understanding what may be contributing to sleep challenges is the first step in providing the right support.

💤 What is good sleep?
When we think about sleep, we often focus on how many hours our child gets, but sleep quality is just as important.

Throughout the night, the brain cycles through different stages of sleep, each playing a unique role in growth, learning, emotional regulation, memory, and physical recovery. Frequent waking or not getting enough sleep can interrupt these cycles, meaning children may miss out on the restorative benefits of deep and REM sleep.

Sleep is an important part of childhood development. While every child’s sleep needs are different, research highlights the relationship between sleep quality and children’s ability to regulate emotions, learn, attend and participate in daily activities.

Over the weekend, we attended the Source Kids Disability Expo to connect with local services and stay up to date with supports available for children and families in the disability and NDIS space.

It was a valuable opportunity to explore a wide range of organisations, resources and approaches that support participation, development and inclusion across different settings.

This week we had the opportunity to attend the OT Exchange conference in Brisbane!

It was a fantastic opportunity filled with learning, networking and reflecting on how we can continue to improve the support we provide to children and families. Topics ranged from innovative group programmes and emerging Telehealth and single-session service models, through to feeding support and fostering meaningful connection in sessions.

We’re looking forward to seeing what professional development opportunities come next!
