💊 PBS medicines are now more affordable for Australians.

Earlier this year, the Australian Government introduced changes to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) to help reduce the cost of essential medicines.

Here’s what’s changed:
• PBS medicines now cost no more than $25 for Medicare card holders, reduced from $31.60
• Commonwealth concession card holders will continue to pay no more than $7.70 per PBS medicine until 2030
• Eligible patients with stable, ongoing conditions may also be able to access 60-day prescriptions on selected PBS medicines

For many Australians, this means fewer trips to the pharmacy, less time managing repeat prescriptions, and lower out-of-pocket costs for important medications.

If you’d like to learn more about your eligibility for 60-day prescriptions or managing your medications, speak with your GP or pharmacist.

🩺 Men’s Health Week runs from 15 to 21 June.

On average, Australian men live around four years less than women. Many are also less likely to visit a GP when something feels off, often waiting until symptoms become harder to ignore.

For a lot of men, that comes down to long-standing attitudes around “pushing through”, staying quiet, and not wanting to make a fuss. But small check-ins can make a big difference.

A routine GP appointment can provide key insights into your long-term health through a few simple readings:
• Body Mass Index
• Blood pressure
• Cholesterol levels
• Blood sugar levels

These numbers help build a clear picture of your health, allowing your GP to identify risks early and support you with practical steps before issues become more serious. Conditions like heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes often develop gradually and without obvious symptoms.

If you’ve been putting off a check-up, Men’s Health Week is a good reminder to book one in. Encourage a mate, brother, father, son, or colleague to do the same.

🩸 World Blood Donor Day 2026

Every blood donation has the potential to save lives.

From emergency care and surgeries to cancer treatment and chronic illness management, donated blood plays a vital role in supporting patients across Australia every day. Yet demand for blood and plasma remains constant, and donors are always needed.

Just one donation can help multiple people, making it one of the simplest ways to make a real impact in your community.

If you’re eligible to donate, World Blood Donor Day is a timely reminder to book an appointment or learn more about becoming a donor. A small act of generosity can make a life-changing difference for someone else.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that you are never too young to take bowel symptoms seriously 💙

While the risk of bowel cancer increases with age, cases in younger Australians are rising. Symptoms should never be ignored, no matter your age.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as:
▪ Blood in your stool
▪ Changes in bowel habits
▪ Ongoing abdominal pain
▪ Unexplained weight loss
▪ Persistent fatigue

Speak with your GP. Early investigation and prompt referral for further testing, including a colonoscopy where appropriate, can make a significant difference.

When detected early, bowel cancer is one of the most treatable cancers.

This Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, know the signs, trust your instincts, and don’t delay speaking with your doctor.

🦋 Today is World Eating Disorders Action Day, a moment to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind anyone who is struggling that support is within reach.

Eating disorders affect more than 1 million Australians, of every age, gender, background and body type. They are often invisible from the outside, which is part of why early conversations matter so much. Many people wait far longer than they need to before reaching out, often because of stigma, or a quiet sense that their experience isn't "serious enough" to warrant help.

We want you to know that it is.

If you're noticing changes in your relationship with food, eating, exercise or body image, or you're worried about a friend, family member or partner, your GP is a good place to start. A confidential conversation, a careful assessment, and a referral pathway to the right specialist support when you need it. You don't need a diagnosis, or to be at a crisis point, to come in and talk.

Recovery is possible, and early support makes a real difference.

Food Allergy Week (25–31 May) is a reminder to raise awareness and support people living with food allergies 🥜 🥛 🥚 🐟 🦐 🌾

Food allergy is common in Australia, affecting more than 1.5 million people. Even small amounts of an allergen can trigger a serious reaction.

Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts to certain foods. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:
• Skin reactions such as hives or swelling
• Stomach pain, vomiting or diarrhoea
• Coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing
• In severe cases, anaphylaxis

Simple steps like reading food labels, asking about ingredients, and knowing how to respond to a reaction can make a real difference to safety.

If you or your child has a food allergy, it is important to have an up-to-date allergy action plan and carry prescribed medication at all times.

If you are concerned about possible food allergies or have experienced a reaction, please book an appointment with your GP for assessment and support.

On World Family Doctor Day, we recognise the role family doctors play at the heart of everyday healthcare.

This year's WONCA theme is “Compassionate Care in a Digital World.” It reflects a question every practice is working through right now: how to bring technology into primary care without losing what makes it primary care. The continuity. The trust. The understanding of a patient across years, not just visits.

Family doctors see more than presenting symptoms. They see histories, families, and patterns. That kind of care takes time to build and is worth protecting as the tools around it evolve.

To the 500+ GPs practising in Better Medical clinics across Australia, thank you for your hard work, resilience, and the invaluable care you provide to your patients and local communities every day.
