๐Ÿ“… This week (14โ€“20 June) is Refugee Week 2026 ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

The theme for this year is โ€˜A Million Storiesโ€™, marking the incredible milestone of over one million refugees welcomed to Australia since the Second World War.

At GV Public Health, we recognise that a healthy community relies on connection, safety, and a sense of belonging for everyone ๐Ÿงฌโœจ Every journey to Australia is unique, and each story shapes the vibrant, diverse society we live in today.

Our colleagues, neighbours, and friends from refugee backgrounds enrich our community and strengthen our collective spirit every day ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’œ

This week, we encourage you to listen to these diverse stories, challenge stereotypes, and help build a more supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Learn more about how you can participate and celebrate local stories at Refugee Week Australia.

Getting your health in order means giving your body the right fuel. What we eat affects our energy levels, our mood, and our long-term health.

Our tip for today is simple: ๐—˜๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ

You don't need a complicated diet to stay healthy. Making a few small changes to what you put on your plate can make a massive difference:
๐Ÿ ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ด๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ ๐˜€๐˜๐˜‚๐—ณ๐—ณ: Try to add extra fruit and vegetables to your meals each day.
Reach for water instead of soft drinks, energy drinks, or juice.
๐Ÿ— ๐—–๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜€: Pick lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts, or beans to keep your muscles strong and your energy steady.

Eating well helps protect you against conditions like heart disease and diabetes, and it keeps your mind sharp for work and family.

If you want to know more about how your diet impacts things like your cholesterol or blood sugar, make sure to bring it up next time you See Your GP!

Menโ€™s Health Week: Tip 1 โ€“ Keep Active (Move More) ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™

Getting your health in order starts with moving your body! Regular physical activity is one of the best things you can do for your heart, your muscles, and your mind.

Our tip for today is simple: aim for at least 30 minutes of movement most days.

You donโ€™t need to go to a gym or run a marathon - there are plenty of easy ways to get moving:
๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ Go for a brisk walk down by the river or around the local park.
๐ŸŒฑ Spend some time working out in the garden.
โšฝ Kick a footy or play a casual sport with your mates or kids.

Moving more helps lower your blood pressure, cuts down stress, and gives you more energy.

Check in with your GP at your next visit to chat about the best, safest ways for you to stay active as you age.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ Menโ€™s Health Week 2026 ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™

This week (15โ€“21 June) is Menโ€™s Health Week in Australia. This year, the message is simple: See Your GP (General Practitioner / Family Doctor).

Many men wait too long to see a doctor when they feel unwell or stressed. You do not need to be seriously sick to visit a doctor. Going for a regular check-up keeps you healthy for your family, your work, and your community.

๐Ÿฉบ When should you see a doctor?
โœณ๏ธ If you have pain or an injury that does not go away.
โœณ๏ธ If you feel constantly stressed, anxious, or sad.
โœณ๏ธ If you are having trouble sleeping or feel very tired.
โœณ๏ธ For regular health checks (like checking your blood pressure or skin).

๐Ÿ’ฌ Take Action Today!

Stick with us this week as we go through some practical tips on how to get your health in order!

Quick health reminder!

While the risk to most Victorians is low, parts of northern and western Australia are currently seeing an increase in diphtheria cases.

Because of this, Victoria is proactively offering free booster vaccines for residents planning to travel to these higher-risk areas. It is an easy way to make sure you stay fully protected while away from home.

If you are planning a trip or just want to make sure your routine immunisations are up to date, read the shared details below or have a quick chat with your GP or local pharmacy.

Today is National Sorry Day in Australia. An anniversary that isnโ€™t a celebration, rather observes the release of the Bringing them Home Report by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. The report was an inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their families between 1910 to 1970. The report documents the Australian legislation that removed children to assimilate to live a western lifestyle, but also noted merging of Aboriginal people to live western lifestyles in segregated communities, such practise were part of Colonisation of Australia.

Today we acknowledge the enduring strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who continue to share their culture and history, whilst living with intergenerational trauma. We will always commit to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and continue to build trust in receiving culturally safe services, programs and health information.

IDAHOBIT Day 2026๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™

Today we stand together to recognise the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia.

This yearโ€™s theme for 2026 reminds us of the importance of visibility, respect and inclusion for LGBTQIA+ communities everywhere.

At GVPHU, we are committed to creating safe, welcoming and inclusive space for everyone in our community ๐Ÿ’™

Letโ€™s continue to speak up, show support, and work together to ensure every person is treated with dignity and respectโ€”today and every day ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒˆ

As we head into colder months, illnesses like flu and measles can spread more easily โ€” but vaccination helps reduce the risk.

World Immunisation Week reminds us that protection works best when people stay up to date across all ages.

If youโ€™re booking your flu vaccine, itโ€™s also a good time to ask about other vaccines you may need, including MMR.

๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™ Stay well, Stay protected.
