Supplements can be wonderful when they're needed.
But one of the biggest nutritional gaps I see isn't a vitamin or mineral deficiency.
It's a lack of fibre.
Fibre doesn't get the same attention as protein, collagen or the latest health trend, yet it plays an important role in so many aspects of health.
Adequate fibre can help support:
healthy digestion and bowel function
beneficial gut bacteria
blood sugar regulation
cholesterol balance
hormone metabolism
satiety and appetite regulation
long-term metabolic health
The challenge is that many people are eating plenty of processed foods, but not enough vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole foods.
In clinic, I often find people are surprised by how much better they feel when they simply increase the amount and variety of plant foods they're eating.
Of course, some people need to increase fibre gradually, particularly if they have digestive issues.
But before spending hundreds of dollars on the latest supplement, it may be worth asking:
Am I eating enough fibre-rich whole foods every day?
Sometimes the most powerful health tools aren't the newest or most exciting.
They're the foundations we've forgotten.
