Supplements can be wonderful when they're needed.

But one of the biggest nutritional gaps I see isn't a vitamin or mineral deficiency.

It's a lack of fibre.

Fibre doesn't get the same attention as protein, collagen or the latest health trend, yet it plays an important role in so many aspects of health.

Adequate fibre can help support:

healthy digestion and bowel function
beneficial gut bacteria
blood sugar regulation
cholesterol balance
hormone metabolism
satiety and appetite regulation
long-term metabolic health

The challenge is that many people are eating plenty of processed foods, but not enough vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole foods.

In clinic, I often find people are surprised by how much better they feel when they simply increase the amount and variety of plant foods they're eating.

Of course, some people need to increase fibre gradually, particularly if they have digestive issues.

But before spending hundreds of dollars on the latest supplement, it may be worth asking:

Am I eating enough fibre-rich whole foods every day?

Sometimes the most powerful health tools aren't the newest or most exciting.

They're the foundations we've forgotten.

There are always new health trends.

New diets.
New supplements.
New gadgets.
New things we're told we "must" be doing.

But the health trend I'm most excited about isn't actually new at all.

It's prevention.

I'm seeing more people becoming proactive about their health rather than waiting until symptoms become severe or a diagnosis is made.

They're asking:

How can I improve my health now?
What do my blood tests really mean?
Are there early warning signs I should be paying attention to?
What can I do to age well?

After over 30 years in practice, I've learned that the body often gives us clues long before it gives us a crisis.

Small shifts in energy.
Changes in digestion.
More difficulty managing stress.
Blood sugar changes.
Hormonal symptoms.
Nutrient depletion.

These things matter.

Not because they mean something is seriously wrong, but because they offer us an opportunity to take action early.

One of the things I love most about natural medicine is that it isn't just about helping people when they're unwell.

It's also about helping people stay well.

Because prevention will always be easier than trying to recover after years of pushing through symptoms and hoping they'll go away.

Your future health is being shaped by the choices you make today.

When most women think about their health in midlife, they think about hormones.

And while hormones certainly matter, there's another important change happening that gets far less attention:

Loss of muscle.

From our 30s and 40s onwards, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass unless we actively do something to maintain it.

Why does this matter?

Because muscle isn't just about strength or appearance.

Muscle helps:

💪🏽regulate blood sugar
💪🏽support metabolism
💪🏽maintain healthy weight
💪🏽improve balance and mobility
💪🏽support healthy ageing
💪🏽increase energy and resilience

Yet many women are still trying to eat less and less while moving less and less.

The result?

Less muscle.
A slower metabolism.
More fatigue.
More difficulty maintaining weight.

One of the best health decisions I made recently was adding more strength-based exercise into my routine. For me, that has been Pilates-based strength work alongside walking and yoga.

Combined with adequate protein and good nutrition, it has helped me feel stronger, more capable and better supported through this stage of life.

If you're in your 40s, 50s or beyond, don't just focus on losing weight.

Focus on building and maintaining strength.

Your future self will thank you for it.

Many people put their health on hold during winter.

They'll start exercising when the weather warms up.
They'll eat better after winter.
They'll deal with their fatigue later.
They'll look into those symptoms when life settles down.

But what if winter is actually the perfect time to invest in your health?

This is the season when many people notice:

❄lower energy
❄increased aches and pains
❄more frequent colds and infections
❄low mood
❄sugar cravings
❄digestive changes
❄worsening hormonal symptoms

Rather than simply getting through winter, this can be a valuable time to rebuild your foundations.

Winter is a great time to:
✓ Improve nutrient stores
✓ Support your immune system
✓ Stabilise blood sugar
✓ Improve gut health
✓ Reduce inflammation
✓ Build better sleep habits
✓ Address those symptoms you've been putting up with

The clients who feel their best in spring are often the ones who started looking after themselves in winter.

Health isn't built overnight.

It's built through the small choices we make long before we see the results.

What is one thing you could do this winter that your future self would thank you for?

One of the biggest shifts people make when they start working with a naturopath is realising that the symptom isn't always the problem.

A headache isn't always a headache problem.

Fatigue isn't always an energy problem.

PMS isn't always a hormone problem.

Weight gain isn't always a calorie problem.

Brain fog isn't always a stress problem.

The body is an interconnected system, and symptoms are often messages pointing us toward something deeper.

For example:

A woman struggling with fatigue may have low B12, poor blood sugar regulation, inadequate protein intake, disrupted sleep, stress physiology issues, or iron that looks "normal" but isn't optimal.

Someone with headaches may have blood sugar instability, nutrient deficiencies, hormonal changes, inflammation, dehydration or digestive issues contributing.

A person struggling with weight loss may have insulin resistance, poor sleep, chronic stress, inflammation or metabolic dysfunction playing a role.

This is why simply chasing symptoms doesn't always create lasting change.

The goal isn't just to silence the messenger.

The goal is to understand why the message is there in the first place.

When we identify and address the underlying patterns, symptoms often begin to make a lot more sense.

And that's where real health changes can happen.
