A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 27 studies found that even small amounts, around two standard drinks, can delay and shorten REM sleep, the stage linked to feeling properly rested. Disruption worsens progressively with larger amounts.

It might feel like alcohol helps you fall asleep. The research shows the quality of that sleep tells a different story.
