Have you ever stopped to think about where your skin actually comes from?
It sounds like an odd question, doesn't it?

Every few weeks your body has replaced the outer layer of your skin. New skin cells are constantly being made. They're built from the food you eat, the nutrients you absorb and the raw materials your body has available.

That's why I spend so much time talking about digestion with people who come to see me with eczema.

If we aren't breaking food down properly, or if the digestive system is inflamed, it becomes much harder for the body to access the nutrients needed to build healthy skin.

Research is also showing that many people with eczema have changes in their gut microbiome. Those trillions of bacteria living inside us aren't just helping digest food. They're actively involved in educating and regulating the immune system.

Have you ever noticed your skin seems to behave itself for weeks, and then suddenly flares after a stressful period? You're certainly not imagining it.

I hear this story all the time in clinic. Someone has been juggling work, family, poor sleep or simply too much on their plate and then, almost out of nowhere, the eczema returns.

Stress doesn't cause eczema, but it can make it much harder for the body to keep inflammation under control.

When we're under constant stress, our nervous system stays switched on. Sleep often suffers, digestion slows down and the immune system becomes more reactive. Research also recognises that stress can influence both eczema severity and quality of life.

It's also about creating an environment where the body feels safe enough to repair.

Supporting family health is something Iโ€™m passionate about. When the household understands the importance of gut health and nourishing foods, everyone benefitsโ€”from children through to adults. Healthy habits truly start at home.

Have you ever noticed that your eczema seems to flare after you've been sick, stressed or eaten differently?

That's usually not a coincidence.
Our skin is incredibly clever. It's one of the body's largest organs, and it's constantly communicating with us. Rather than seeing eczema as something that's gone wrong with the skin, I like to think of it as the body's way of asking for a little extra support.

Research tells us that people with eczema often have changes in both their skin microbiome and their gut microbiome. In other words, the bacteria living on the skin and inside the digestive tract aren't as diverse or as balanced as we'd like to see.

This is why our goal isn't simply to calm the skin. We want to nourish the gut, support digestion, rebuild the microbiome and give the immune system the opportunity to settle down naturally. It's about creating an environment where your body can finally do what it was designed to doโ€”heal.

I wish every person who walked into my clinic knew that eczema isn't something you've caused.

Parents often tell me they feel guilty. Adults wonder if they've done something wrong. They've tried every cream, every elimination diet and every recommendation they've found online, yet the eczema keeps coming back.

The truth is, eczema is rarely caused by one single thing.

Instead, I think of it like a bucket.

Every person has a different-sized bucket. Over time it fills with stress, illness, poor sleep, antibiotics, environmental exposures, food sensitivities, nutritional deficiencies and digestive dysfunction. Eventually the bucket overflows, and for some people that overflow shows up on the skin.

The good news is that healing isn't usually about finding one magic answer either.

It's about gradually emptying the bucket.
Supporting digestion.
Reducing inflammation.
Improving sleep.
Nourishing the body with foods that actually provide the nutrients needed for repair.

The GAPS framework has taught me that healing is rarely about chasing symptoms. It's about creating a healthier internal environment so the body can begin to regulate itself again.

Healing doesn't happen overnight, but your body is always trying to move towards health when we remove obstacles and provide what it needs.

That's something worth remembering on the hard days.

Rather than simply asking, โ€˜What cream should I use?โ€™, a naturopath encourages us to ask deeper questions:

โ€ข Is digestion working efficiently?
โ€ข Is the gut lining healthy?
โ€ข Is the immune system constantly being challenged?
โ€ข Are nutrient deficiencies slowing skin repair?
โ€ข Are stress, sleep or environmental toxins adding to the body's burden?

The skin is one of the body's largest elimination and communication organs. When digestion, nutrient absorption and the microbiome are compromised, the skin often reflects what's happening internally.

While eczema appears on the skin, it's rarely just about the skin. Current research recognises eczema as a complex condition involving the immune system, skin barrier, genetics, environment and the microbiome. Many people with eczema also have changes in both their skin and gut microbial diversity, along with increased inflammation and immune dysregulation.

Sleep is an essential piece of the puzzle for maintaining your immune health. Itโ€™s a regenerative time for your body when it relaxes, repairs and restores all your systems. Poor sleep can compromise your immune system and increase your risk of illness, leaving you open to colds, flu and infection. When youโ€™re sleep deprived, your protective immune cells go down and inflammation goes up. Conversely, restful sleep before, during and after illness can build your resilience to illness. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Ensure that your bedroom is cool, airy and dark for deep sleep. Try following sleep hygiene recommendations if you have trouble falling or staying asleep.
