We are incredibly proud to announce that Mater Research’s landmark Strong Families Study is now officially open for recruitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families across Queensland!

Backed by a historic $4.69 million National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) grant—the largest single grant ever received by Mater Research—this longitudinal study aims to showcase the strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and drive generational change by improving health and wellbeing outcomes from pregnancy through the critical first few years of a child's life.

After two years of yarning with more than 400 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Queensland, the study's design and ongoing implementation is now proudly led by a 30-member Indigenous Steering Committee.

Based directly on community priorities, the study provides participating families with immediate, culturally safe research and health education, and includes nested intervention options:
💛 Social Emotional Wellbeing Support: Referral to culturally appropriate psychological support for parenting and mental wellbeing.
🖤 The LEAP Program: Identifying babies at risk of neurodevelopment outcomes including cerebral palsy early, with support from Aboriginal Health Workers and physiotherapists to learn play-based activities that promote healthy development.
❤️ By participating, families receive immediate, localised support while contributing to a healthier future for the next generation.

💙 "I've always been very proud to say, 'I'm a Mater employee'." 💙

Meet Kelly, a Health Records Officer celebrating an incredible 40 years with Mater.

After attending a Sisters of Mercy school, Kelly was encouraged to apply to Mater during her university studies — beginning her career collecting blood samples before moving into health records.

"My favourite patients were the babies in Mater Mothers'," Kelly said.

"I used to have many fond memories of giving the babies little rocks and pats before I returned them to mum, calm and asleep."

Now based at Mater Hospital Brisbane, Kelly plays a vital role preparing, scanning and managing patient records, ensuring clinicians can access them seamlessly.

"The biggest change that we've had is the introduction of electronic records," she said.

"In the day of paper records, you could get a few different clinicians wanting to see the chart at the same time, and there'd be a bit of a fight over it. So, it's been a huge improvement in patient care."

Kelly's advice to new Mater colleagues is to embrace the Mater values.

"Mercy, dignity, quality, compassion, and care; it's a good way to live," she said.

Meet Mohib Ullah 👋

From a Rohingya background, Mohib works with Mater's Refugee and Multicultural Health service and as a member of the Refugee Health Advisory Group helps bridge cultural and language gaps between healthcare providers and community members.

Through education sessions, workshops and one-on-one support, Mohib helps people better understand the Australian healthcare system—empowering them to access the care they need with confidence.

This Refugee Week (15–21 June), we recognise the power of connection, trust, and culturally responsive care in improving health outcomes for vulnerable communities.

Bowel cancer is highly treatable — especially when found early.

But right now, fewer than half of eligible Australians are getting screened.

This Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, don’t ignore the signs — your body might be telling you something important:

• Changes in bowel habits
• Persistent abdominal discomfort
• Blood in your stool
• Ongoing fatigue or iron deficiency

At Mater, our gastroenterology specialists use advanced procedures like colonoscopy to detect and remove precancerous polyps early — often before cancer develops.

Early detection could save your life. Expert care makes a difference.

👉 Talk to your GP about screening

A life‑changing prostate cancer surgery — performed from 2,400km away.

A surgeon in one country. A prostate cancer patient in another.

What followed was a groundbreaking robotic prostatectomy using telesurgery, highlighting just how far urological care has evolved.

Supported by Mater urologist Dr Sam Davies, this procedure demonstrates what’s now possible for men diagnosed with prostate cancer — when early detection, timely access to specialist care and advanced technology come together.

This Men’s Health Week, it’s an important reminder that innovation and early intervention can make a life‑changing difference.
