CRU - Community Resource Unit Ltd. CRU exists to create & promote positive change so that people with disabilities can belong to & actively contribute to social & economic life.

CRU believes that people with disabilities should belong to and participate in community life. This means their interests are best served when they are supported to grow up in a family, go to school at their local neighbourhood school, participate in community activities with their peers, have a home of their own, maintain strong relationships with friends, parents and siblings, work and participate in community life and have their rights as citizens protected.

Everyone can work! Having a job is an important part of a good life. It allows us to earn a living, meet people, use our skills and learn new ones. It is also possible to work and still receive a Disability Support Pension.

Registrations are closing soon for CRU’s workshop Meaningful Work for You: How to find it or create it!

The workshop is at the Caloundra RSL on Wednesday 16 September 2026.

It is for people with disability who want to work in open employment but have found that the traditional pathways don’t always lead to the jobs you want.

You will get started in working out what sort of job would be right for you, and learn about different ways to work towards it, even if it means creating a job yourself.

Introduction to Sensory Awareness and Movement Differences is a highly interactive workshop presented by CRU & Joyce-Lyn Smith. It’s filled with real-life examples and practical information and strategies to build understanding when managing sensory differences and challenges.

The workshop can be particularly useful for Autistic people and those living with neurological differences and other people with disabilities, family members and supporters.

Understanding the uniqueness of our own sensory awareness and movement differences and how they might impact us can be key to paving a way to thriving at school, work, or in friendships and relationships.

🎉 Congratulations to CRU Senior Facilitator Catherine Laherty!

CRU is delighted that Senior Facilitator Catherine Laherty has been appointed to the Queensland Carers Advisory Council as an organisational representative for CRU.

Catherine has worked at CRU as a Facilitator and Senior Facilitator for over a decade, working alongside families and individuals with disabilities to help build the knowledge, confidence and relationships needed for full and inclusive lives. Catherine has a brother with a disability and a deep commitment to the dignity and rights of people with disabilities and their families.

The Queensland Carers Advisory Council is appointed by Minister Amanda Camm MP, Minister of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety, and made up of carers, representatives from organisations that support people in caring roles, and Queensland Government representatives. The Council provides advice to the Government to promote the interests of unpaid carers and to make recommendations that support the recognition of people in caring roles.

CRU recognises that families usually provide the foundation of care, connection and advocacy in the lives of their loved ones. Sustaining this care requires recognition, practical supports, access to information and opportunities for families to connect with and learn from one another.

Recognition of carers should be accompanied by recognition of the inherent value, rights and contributions of the people they support. People receiving care make important contributions to their families and communities, and they are entitled to the support of carers who are well-rested, adequately resourced, informed and respected in their role.

The newly appointed Council met for the first time on 19 August, and Catherine looks forward to working alongside the other Council members to encourage greater recognition of family carers and for services and systems that support, rather than complicate families’ efforts to care for and advocate for their loved ones.

Congratulations Catherine on this well-deserved appointment.

Don’t miss out!
Registrations are closing for CRU’s face-to-face workshop in Moranbah. Learn new ways to build real connection for children with disability in every day, meet with others pursing inclusive lives for children with disability.

This workshop will be facilitated by Ainsley Robertson and Bronwyn Moloney, between them they have supported 100s of families across Queensland to build inclusive lives for children and adults with disability.

CRU’s new face to face workshop, ‘Inclusion as a way of life’ will explore:

- What genuine inclusion looks like and why it matters
- How to identify welcoming people and places in your community
- Practical strategies families have used to build inclusive lives

This workshop is for parents, carers and supporters of children with disability (0-18 years) It is fully funded, so free for families.
