Meet Alex! 👋

While she now supports families at Mater Mothers’ Springfield, Alex first joined the Mater Mothers’ family in South Brisbane a decade ago.

Do you have a highlight from your time at Mater so far?

"Being one of the first midwives on the frontline of Mater Mothers’ Springfield has been a truly unique experience: while the hospital opened from April and birthing services opened in May, we were delivering Antenatal Clinics from Mater Health Hub, Springfield from November 2025. Navigating uncharted territory and getting a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes when opening a hospital has been a huge motivation contributing to the success of our team."

As we wrap up World Breastfeeding Week, what role do you play in supporting mums in their breastfeeding journey?

"We start the conversation around breastfeeding right at the start of a family’s journey with us. We provide evidence-based information, resources and guidance to set women and their families up for success. A number of women are surprised to hear the profound benefits that breastfeeding has for both them and their babies. World Breastfeeding Week is a time to showcase and increase awareness of the benefits that breastfeeding can have for families."

What inspired you to be a midwife?

"Working with families that are about to embark on the most important time in the lives brings a lot of purpose to my week. I absolutely love talking with women about the highs and lows of pregnancy and supporting them throughout."

Congratulations to our July Stars of the Month, Katie and Stef, both nominated by their fellow Mater staff members! ⭐

Katie was recognised for her mix of health, IT and quality improvement expertise. "There's no one else with the same combination of knowledge in health, IT and quality improvement. We appreciate Katie for her amazing skills in designing spreadsheets and IT systems that help our Mater leaders and clinicians provide exceptional care to our women and babies."

Dr Stef, who works on our busy public postnatal ward, was celebrated for the exceptional care, compassion and dedication she brings to work every day. "Stef shows immense care and empathy towards the women and families in her care, ensuring they feel supported, respected and heard," another nomination shared.

One year ago, Florence arrived unexpectedly at 27+3 weeks, weighing only 850g.

After 111 days in Mater's Neonatal Critical Care Unit and Cardiac Surgical and Special Care Units, and life-changing surgery for duodenal atresia at Queensland Children's Hospital, she is now thriving!

Meet Victoria 💕🩺

Dr Victoria Gill is a Junior House Officer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mater Mothers’ Hospital. 🤰
In one of Australia’s busiest maternity hospitals, no two days are the same.

For Victoria, the reward is helping mothers, babies and families feel safe, supported and confident during some of life’s most important moments. 💗

"One of my proudest moments at Mater was helping to deliver babies on my very first day as a doctor," she said.

"Being part of such a life-changing moment from day one was incredibly special and remains a highlight of my career so far!" 🥰

Little Ryder had a bumpy start to life — suffering three brain bleeds after he was born at 25 weeks' gestation, weighing just 815 grams.

He battled a range of other health conditions during his three-month stay in Mater Mothers' Neonatal Critical Care Unit and his parents feared he might never walk or talk.

Now two years old, Ryder is thriving. 🌟

He has met his milestones and been discharged by his specialists.

"We wouldn’t be where we are today without the team at Mater Mothers', and for them we are eternally grateful," said Ryder's mum, Iesha.

Neonatal Unit Clinical Facilitator Mary Hartley is celebrating 40 years at Mater! ✨💙

Since starting her midwifery training at Mater Mothers' Hospital in 1986, Mary has seen significant advances in neonatal medicine.

"What has stayed constant throughout all that change is the dedication of the people," she said.

"I've worked alongside so many talented nurses, midwives and clinicians."

Mary's career highlights include a six-month exchange at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, introducing neonatal "nests" to Mater after seeing their success overseas, and contributing to innovative research projects through Mater's Queensland Diabetes Centre.

Now, she supports the next generation of neonatal nurses.

"The nurses coming through today are remarkable, and I feel incredibly fortunate to play a small part in their journey," said Mary.

Thank you, Mary, for your 40 years of compassionate care for our littlest patients, and your continued dedication to growth and learning.

Six months later, mum Katie says he is thriving! 💕
