At our National Reconciliation Week 2026 event in Brisbane, keynote speaker Helena Wright reminded a room of health and community services professionals that genuine change cannot be rushed or reported into existence.

Helena is Board Director of Reconciliation Queensland and deputy CEO of the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak, based in Brisbane.

"Meaningful change only happens at the speed of trust and at the community's pace. Trust can't be legislated, it can't be purchased and it certainly can't be rushed."

In health, that means listening before acting, honouring commitments and staying engaged when conversations get difficult. Words to carry well beyond Reconciliation Week.

Inclusive healthcare doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when health providers have the knowledge and tools to deliver it. It happens when it’s a priority.

The Access for All online course offers practical, real-world insights into the barriers people with disability face and how health providers can remove them.

This course is FREE until 30 June 2026.

Are you a First Nations business or working in health and community services?

CheckUP’s Industry Workforce Advisors are funded by the Queensland Government and here to support you.

This testimonial from a First Nations Small Business Owner captures how Carissa McAllister, CheckUP's Industry Workforce Advisor - First Nations, helped them streamline their business:

“Since I’ve had the opportunity to connect with Carissa, she has been so very helpful with such an amazing array of ideas on how to streamline the business. Carissa has not only been able to convey the information in such a congruent yet digestible manner, she has definitely given me a stronger level of comprehension. There is no way I would’ve achieved this of my own according, or possibly from another coach.”

Not bad for a mid-week work adventure! Clear blue skies, good company, and a spot of art appreciation.

CheckUP's Mary-Anne Quilter, Manager – Cancer Prevention, and Mirabelle Brown, Regional Coordinator - North/North West/Townsville, recently visited Mount Isa and Cloncurry.

Whilst in Cloncurry they met with Dr Robert Teunisse (right), who was delivering a skin cancer early detection clinic at Clements Medical’s Cloncurry practice.

Dr Teunisse delivers vital skin clinics in Burketown, Cloncurry, Kurumba and Normanton, thanks to CheckUP's Skin Cancer Early Detection Service.

CheckUP is grateful for Dr Teunisse's service, along with support from Clinic Practice Manager, Kim Mansfield (left).

We need to do better.

The Access for All course supports health providers to build disability awareness, challenge assumptions, and understand the real experiences of people with disability in healthcare settings.
