Breastfeeding can be hot, thirsty work! A fully breastfeeding mum produces ~800 mL milk per day and her metabolism is working hard to support milk production. A recent study showed that breastfeeding mums lose additional fluid through sweat too! Adequate fluid intake is important to ensure you don't get dehydrated.
- Keep a water bottle with you wherever you go
- Add citrus wedges or frozen berries for variety
- monitor your urine colour- it should be a clear, pale yellow colour

Science clearly shows that babies are born with an immature nervous system, and depend on constant close physical contact to regulate their body systems and emotional state.
Frequent breastfeeding, skin to skin cuddles and holding or carrying your baby helps them to feel safe, and over time, to learn how to regulate themselves. You are not spoiling your baby, you are setting them up for success!

How can I be sure that my breastfed baby is getting enough milk?
Babies come in all shapes and sizes. It can be easy to compare your baby with others and wonder if you are on track. A baby's weight gains provide useful information, but weight gain is not always steady from week to week. Other reassuring signs of adequate milk intake and infant growth include:
- Baby is content after most feeds
- Baby has at least 5 heavily wet nappies in 24 hours
- Bowel actions are soft, pasty or loose
- Baby's clothing and nappy sizes going up over time
You spend every day with your baby so you are less likely to notice their growth. Friends and family are more likely to observe your baby's changes as they don't see your baby as often. Whether they are long and lean, or very cuddly, if your baby is feeding well and mostly happy, it's likely baby is doing just fine.
Expected weight gain is 150-200g/week from 0-3 months, and 100-150g/week from 3-6 months. If you have any worries about your baby's weight please reach out for a chat to explore your baby's health, your milk supply and breastfeeding journey.

Feeding a baby doesn't need to be complicated! Whether breastfeeding or or bottle feeding, your baby just needs for you to respond to their cues and interaction with them. Stopping and starting feeds and sucking on an empty teat are not necessary or helpful. Here's a sensible blog on responsive versus paced bottle feeding. Enjoy your baby!

Paced bottle feeding is a wildly popular bottle feeding technique that is promoted as the best way to feed babies who are breastfed. When I did a google search for paced bottle feeding, there were a whopping 572,000,000 results! What’s more, definitions of paced bottle feeding techniques varied si...
