Abstract: Men account for at least 1/3rd of eating disorder cases but have historically been underrepresented in treatment settings and eating disorder research. Recent years have seen an increased focus on men’s mental health including a greater understanding of what impacts help seeking behaviour and men’s experiences of eating disorders. While some risk factors like traits/temperament and adverse life experiences are common across all genders, others (e.g. gender norms and related appearance ideals) vary requiring a gender specific approach to address them. This workshop will explore:
* The relationship between masculinity norms and diet culture/body image pressures for cisgender men with a focus on recent trends like looksmaxxing and biohacking.
* Similarities and differences in risk factors and eating disorder presentations across the lifespan from younger boys/adolescents to middle aged and older men.
* Unique risk factors impacting specific groups e.g. intraminority stress for gay/bi+/queer men
* S*x specific considerations for medical management including physical impacts of eating disorder behaviours and performance and image enhancing drug (PIED) use
* Strategies to support prevention/early intervention, assessment, and treatment of eating disorders in boys and men

Important episode of the ABC Radio National Health Report podcast today with Dr Preeya Alexander MBBS FRACGP CEDC-GP and Norman Swan, exploring the dangerous use of GLP-1s by people experiencing an Eating Disorder. We wholeheartedly agree with the push for appropriate screening and education being undertaken by Doctors prior to these medications being prescribed. Any medication that can help one person, can also harm another, and more caution needs to be taken with these medications.
STRONG TRIGGER WARNING for discussions of eating disorders and weight. https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/healthreport/
