Cholesterol gets talked about a lot, but the terms used can make the conversation hard to follow. So we thought we'd break some of these down.
HDL, LDL, VLDL, Lp(a)and Apo-B are different types of lipoproteins, each playing a specific role in how fats are transported around the body. Understanding what each one does makes the numbers on a blood test much more meaningful.
A few things worth knowing: LDL is not inherently harmful. It serves important functions in cell structure and hormone production. The concern arises when it's elevated in a context of inflammation and artery damage, which is what drives plaque formation.
