👁️ World Ophthalmologist Day | 8 August

Today we celebrate the ophthalmologists and eye care teams whose expertise helps protect and restore one of our most precious senses – sight.

While many people associate ophthalmologists with cataract surgery and vision correction, their impact extends far beyond the operating theatre. They play a vital role in preventing blindness through early screening and intervention, detecting serious health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension through routine eye examinations, caring for children with vision disorders, managing complex eye trauma, and driving research and innovation that continues to transform eye care.

Many ophthalmologists also dedicate their time to humanitarian outreach, helping restore sight in underserved communities, while mentoring and training the next generation of specialists who will shape the future of ophthalmology.

We’re so proud of our very own Hannah Leed!

Hannah, one of our dedicated Scrub/Scout Registered Nurses here at Southbank Day Surgery, recently attended the ONWARD Ophthalmic Nurses Program in Sydney, delivered by Alcon.

Thanks to Alcon’s sponsorship, Hannah was able to take part in this incredible opportunity, with flights and accommodation included!

Hannah described the experience as “valuable and inspiring” and has come back with new knowledge, ideas, and tools that she’s already sharing with the team to support learning and growth across our ophthalmic services.

We’re lucky to have such a passionate and driven nurse as part of our team we can’t wait to see what’s ahead for Hannah! 💙

We are proud to recognise Michelle Hempleman as this quarters recipient of the the Nexus Hospitals Respect and Collaboration Award!

Michelle recently stepped up and took lead of the site whilst our GM/DON was on leave, ensuring everything continued to run smoothly with minimal disruption.

She expertly managed VMO lists, filled vacancies, supported recruitment for open roles, and kept the team motivated and recognised throughout. On top of this, Michelle was on call 24/7 for six weeks a true testament to her dedication and commitment to her team and patients.

There’s nothing more special than seeing our own team members grow 💚

Amity joined us here at Southbank Day Surgery 2025 as a Patient Care Assistant while completing her Bachelor of Nursing. From the very beginning, we could see her potential and it’s been so rewarding to watch her journey unfold.

After graduating in December, Amity stepped into her Registered Nurse role in January and has already begun rotating through our perioperative services. She’s currently working in PACU and making a wonderful impact on both our patients and team.

We’re incredibly proud to support our people as they grow their careers, and Amity’s journey is a great example of what that looks like in action.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Tiki Ewing to Southbank Day Surgery.

Dr Ewing is a highly experienced Ophthalmologist with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred eye care. She completed her medical training in Australia before undertaking specialist ophthalmology training through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO), including advanced fellowship training in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus in Vancouver, Canada.

Her clinical expertise includes cataract surgery, glaucoma, macular conditions, pterygium surgery, and paediatric eye care, alongside comprehensive general ophthalmology services for both adults and children.

Dr Ewing is known for her thoughtful and collaborative approach to care, combining advanced surgical skill with clear communication and a strong focus on supporting patients throughout their treatment journey.

We are proud to have Dr Ewing consulting and operating at Southbank Day Surgery and look forward to the care she will provide to our patients and community. 👏

We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Simon Woods to the Nexus Executive Leadership team as our Chief Medical Officer.

He has led clinical services, overseen medical governance, driven organisational change, and championed patient safety and quality across complex healthcare environments.
