A local artist's work is helping brighten a space that fills with conversation and connection during winter nights.

A series of ink drawings by Guillermo Aranda-Mena has been gifted and displayed at The Alfred’s new After Hours Pilot Program, run by lived/living experience and clinical staff.

“I’m so glad that these pieces, The St Kilda Botanical Gardens Plein-air series, can be part of a place where people can come to feel better,” Guillermo said.

Recognising the need for a relaxed, social atmosphere that is mindful of (but not focussed on) the hard work of healing, the After Hours Pilot Program is a place where mental health consumers, families and carers can join wellbeing, spirituality and art therapy sessions, or simply enjoy a cuppa and pastry together.

Family Services Practice Lead Allira McCall helps facilitate the evening and said artwork is an important part of making people feel comfortable in the space.

“A feature of this program is that carers and family can be here at the same time as consumers, creating opportunities to experience each other in a different way,” Allira said.

"To be able to set the space up in a way that has elements to it that are not so clinical – and even points to the beautiful scenes in the places we live – goes a long way to creating the conditions where this kind of connection can happen.”

Future nurses, doctors, midwives, paramedics and healthcare leaders in the making? We think so.

Year 12 health students from Bendigo Senior Secondary School recently visited The Alfred for a behind-the-scenes look at hospital life, meeting healthcare professionals from across the organisation and trying their hand at practical clinical activities.

Associate Nurse Manager Sue Smith hopes the experience inspires them to consider a career in healthcare.

“They are already coming to us as kind, intelligent individuals,” Sue said. “This is about showing them ways they can use their skills and compassion into the future.”

When Olivia’s father, Paul, died at The Alfred more than seven years ago, he became an organ donor, helping save the lives of three people.

"It was an easy decision for us to make, at the worst possible time," Olivia said.

For Olivia and her family, saying yes reflected the values Paul lived by: be kind, help where you can and give what you can.

Last year, 37 families said yes to organ and tissue donation at The Alfred, resulting in 58 lifesaving organ transplants and many more eye and tissue donations.

Olivia and her mum and two transplant recipients were joined by Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon. Rebecca White, to mark the start of Donate Life Week today at The Alfred.

Not what most people picture when they think of a mental health inpatient unit.

That's exactly the point.

After a major renovation, our adult mental health inpatient unit is now a safer, more welcoming and therapeutic space for consumers, families and staff.

The finishing touches are now being added by artist Melanie Caple, whose vibrant, nature-inspired murals help create a sense of calm, comfort and connection.

“I wanted to bring warmth to the space and make it feel both calm and embracing,” Melanie said.

Patients requiring surgery for vascular conditions now have a smoother road to recovery, thanks to The Alfred’s new hybrid theatre.

Combining a full operating room with advanced imaging equipment, the hybrid theatre enables surgeons to perform a wider range of minimally invasive procedures.

The technology also allows patients to safely undergo multiple procedures in a single day, reducing the need to transfer between departments, spend extended periods in hospital and go under repeated anaesthesia, said Prof Wendy Brown, The Alfred’s Surgical Services Program Director.

“Having high-quality imaging on hand means we can operate with greater precision and, in many cases, avoid some of the large incisions that were once needed – so there’s less chance of complication and more chance of a shorter recovery,” Prof Brown said.

This week NAIDOC Week enters its fifth decade, with the theme 50 Years of Deadly.

Whether you’re getting involved in community celebrations, or attending a NAIDOC event at your workplace, we hope you have a wonderful time celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements.

For Bayside Alfred Senior Aboriginal Advisor Ali Parsons, NAIDOC Week is also an opportunity to reflect on the strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and movements.

“We continue to stand strong, grounded in the knowledge of who we are and proud of where we come from,” Ali said.

“We remain determined to carry our stories, our strength, and our spirit forward for the generations yet to come.”

Today we bid a very fond farewell to much-loved cancer nurse, Helen Mott, after almost 40 years at The Alfred.

Helen arrived as a fresh-faced 21-year-old trainee, leaving home in Geelong to take up residence in The Alfred’s on-site nursing quarters (now Alfred Lane House).

She spent the next four decades dedicating her service to Alfred cancer patients, across radiotherapy, cancer support, and most recently as one of The Alfred's first McGrath Breast Cancer Nurses.

“Working with patients during some of their ‘darkest days’ has been an incredible privilege,” said Helen.

“To be allowed to enter their lives, at such a difficult time, and to stand beside them as they make their way through diagnosis and treatment and, hopefully, recovery, is something I’ll always be truly grateful for.”

Alfred Cancer’s Director of Operations, Ellen Heywood, said Helen’s contribution to the lives of patients, families and colleagues had been profound.

“Helen's compassion, patient-centred approach and positive influence have left a lasting legacy on the cancer program and we will miss her greatly,” Ellen said.

The Alfred is pleased to host Dr Samuela Nanovu as he completes eight weeks of mentorship under neurosurgeon Dr Ron Jithoo OAM, having been conferred this year’s RACS Surgeons International Award.

Currently a trainee neurosurgeon at Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, Fiji, Dr Nanovu is on track to becoming the country’s third ever Fijian neurosurgeon.

So far, Dr Nanovu has observed The Alfred’s trauma team at work, as well as several complex neurosurgery procedures, some of which aren’t yet available in Fiji.

The Alfred’s hyperbaric team had a special visit from a former patient, who came back to pick up her “space helmet” 🌠

Two-year-old Willow regularly travelled from the Royal Children’s Hospital to The Alfred for hyperbaric oxygen treatment (also known as space missions) after contracting a life-threatening fungal infection whilst undergoing chemotherapy for leukaemia.

With both the leukaemia and fungal infection now in remission, and after a long seven months in hospital, Willow is enjoying being back at home with her family.

As a result of their adventures together, the entire hyperbaric team - doctors, nurses, engineers and more - learned to sing songs from Frozen (2013) and became very familiar with the plotline of Finding Nemo (2003).

Willow’s dad Andrew thanked the team for making them feel comfortable and welcome during a tough time.

“You guys made it such an amazing environment for her, which meant the world to us,” Andrew said.

“We’re glad to be able to visit under much happier circumstances.”
