Why We Value Getting To Know You Over Time

A first appointment is rarely the full picture.

Many people's bodies have adapted over months or years, shaped by work, movement habits, past injuries and daily routines that build up slowly.

That's why our team places real value on getting to know people over time, not just addressing a single concern in isolation. Understanding how someone moves, lives and responds across multiple visits often adds context that a single appointment can't capture.

It's part of why continuity of care matters, and why the relationship between practitioner and patient is worth investing in.

What No One Tells You About Osteopathy

Most people think it's just about stretching limbs or clicking joints. It's a bit more than that.

✅ It looks at the whole body - Osteopaths often consider posture, movement patterns and daily habits, not just the spot that's bothering you

✅ It's often more subtle than expected - Many people find the techniques gentle, and describe the sessions as relaxing rather than intense

✅ It may support how the body settles - Some people notice a sense of ease alongside changes in tension, though everyone's experience is different

✅ It's not just for injuries - Some people use it simply to better understand how their body moves and adapts over time

If you've been curious about what an Osteopathy session actually involves, our team including Dr Indigo and Dr Francesco are always happy to have that conversation.

Meet Dr Indigo Bunbury Smith

Dr Indigo Bunbury Smith is part of the team at South Yarra Osteopathy, bringing a calm, patient-centred approach to every appointment.

After completing a double degree in Osteopathy at RMIT University, Indigo went on to build additional training in headaches and migraines, TMJ dysfunction, pregnancy-related care, chronic conditions and trauma-informed practice.

What people often notice about Indigo is how much time she takes to listen. Rather than jumping straight to the area of discomfort, she's interested in understanding how someone's daily life, habits and history may be shaping how their body feels.

She enjoys working with people across all stages of life and values creating a space where people feel genuinely heard.

Making Time to Move Doesn't Always Mean Making Time for the Gym.

A walk outdoors, even during your lunch break, can be an opportunity to step away from the desk, change your environment and keep your body moving.

Small, consistent moments of movement throughout the day can all contribute to your overall wellbeing.

What Makes A Great Osteopath?

It's a question we think about often, and the answer isn't just about technique.

Great Osteopathic care comes from continued learning, genuine listening and a willingness to see each person as an individual rather than a set of symptoms.

At South Yarra Osteopathy, our team places real value on ongoing professional development and sharing knowledge with each other, so that care stays thoughtful and evidence-informed as our understanding grows.

It's this combination of experience and curiosity that shapes how we work with people at every stage of life.

If you'd like to learn more about our clinic and approach, feel free to contact us.

5 Myths About Osteopathy

There's a lot of confusion out there about what Osteopathy actually is and who it's for, so we thought we'd clear a few things up.

Some people think we only treat backs. Others think it's just hands on work, or that you need a referral, or that it's only for adults. None of that's quite right.

Osteopathy is a registered health profession in Australia, regulated by AHPRA. We work with people across all stages of life, using a whole body approach that goes beyond hands on treatment alone.

If you'd like to learn more about our team and how we work, feel free to get in touch.

Ever Notice Your Shoulders Are Up By Your Ears?

It's a common pattern: deep in concentration, or partway through a stressful day, and your shoulders have quietly crept up toward your ears without you noticing.

Some people notice this happening during focused screen work, others during stressful moments or long drives. It can build gradually, which is often why it goes unnoticed until someone points it out or the tension becomes hard to ignore.

The shoulders, neck and upper back work closely together, which is why habits like this can influence how the whole area feels, not just one spot.

Simply noticing when it happens can be a useful first step in understanding your own patterns.
