We spend so much time trying to get rid of insecurity before we do the thing. But what if we’ve got it backwards?
The antidote to insecurity isn’t confidence. It’s experience.
Confidence doesn’t usually come first. It grows from evidence. From showing up when you’re unsure. From having difficult conversations. From making mistakes. From surviving them. From discovering that you’re more capable than you thought.
Whether it’s becoming a parent, starting therapy, changing careers, speaking up in a meeting, or setting a boundary, insecurity often isn’t a sign that you’re not ready. Waiting until you feel completely confident can keep you stuck indefinitely. Ready is an action, not a feeling.
Instead of asking, “How do I stop feeling insecure?” try asking, “What experience do I need that my brain doesn’t have yet?” Experience is the wisest teacher that gives the corrective experience that we sorely need.
And that’s where confidence is built, before the first step, but because you took it.
