As one of Australia's fastest growing cities and most popular tourist destinations, the Gold Coast required a facility that could incorporate flexibility into the design to allow for future expansion. The Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is a highly efficient design with capacity to change and grow to meet future health service needs of the community. Delivering a structure the scale of the G

old Coast University Hospital required a number of detailed planning and design stages. This process commenced back in 2005 and encompasses health service delivery, design and construction. The facility is comprised of seven main buildings, with a total floor space of around 170,000 square metres (excluding car parks). To help you visualise just how large this is, the total floor space of the existing Gold Coast Hospital in Southport is around 54,000 square metres in comparison - around one third of the size of GCUH. The Clinical Services and Clinical Support building connect with the two Inpatient Units, forming the main complex. There are nine levels in the main complex, topped with a helicopter landing site. - Mental Health Unit
- Western car park (with an Eastern car park as a future initiative)

Caught in the wild. 👀

Over the weekend our incredible trauma team volunteered in a mass casualty first aid scenario for the rural fire service.

This was a great opportunity for the trauma team to help our rural firefighters with their first aid skills and support patients prior to arriving at our hospital.

Nice work, team!

At 79 years young, Gold Coast University Hospital wardie Michael Deyudecebus has officially hung up his uniform, closing the chapter on a retirement job that touched the lives of so many.

After his daughter encouraged him to take on the role, Michael became a familiar and much-loved face in the Medical Decisions Unit, where he found purpose, friendship, and the chance to help others.

“All the wardies are very kind and I enjoy having fun with my team and helping people," Michael said.

"I built a lot of relationships with patients and helped them as much as I could."

For Michael, it's always been about the people.

“I’ve met some wonderful friends later in life, who are now some of my closest mates.”

Michael, thank you for your kindness, compassion, and the difference you’ve made.

We wish you a happy, healthy and well-earned retirement. 💙

"When you think of stroke, you assume it only happens to older people. But it can happen to anyone."

At just 35, Ashlee suffered a brainstem stroke that left her with locked-in syndrome, fully aware of what was happening but unable to move or communicate.

Ashlee spent five months being treated at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH), including three in the rehabilitation ward relearning how to use and move her body.

Nearly two years later, she's back at work, walking, talking and continuing to inspire us with just how far she's come.

"The left side of my body is mostly back to normal, while the right side is more affected," Ashlee said.

"I've got foot drop and can't really move my ankle; I can't use my hand at all and can only move my shoulder a little bit. I've learnt to be left-handed."

Looking back, Ashlee said there were warning signs.

"Maybe a month before, I had neck pain and visual aura, which was unusual for me," she said.

"If you are someone that doesn't often have these symptoms and then suddenly get them and they're severe, I would question it."

This National Stroke Week, her message is simple: stroke doesn't discriminate by age. Know the signs. Trust your instincts. Act FAST. More information at https://strokefoundation.org.au/about-stroke/learn

Our annual Soup for the Soul fundraiser brought teams together to raise awareness and funds to support people affected by head and neck cancer — a disease which can have a major impact on eating, drinking
and communication.

“We’re noticing a shift in the demographics of those who are diagnosed with head and neck cancer," Mylee said.

"In recent years we have seen both an increase in the number of females who are diagnosed and patients who have been diagnosed at a much younger age."

More than 5,300 Australians are newly diagnosed with head and neck cancer each year and more than 17,000 people live with the long-term impacts of their treatment.

Thanks to our Speech Pathology, ICON Cancer Care and C4E teams, plus Doctors Orders Café, funds raised throughout July will support research, advocacy and patient support services through Head and Neck
Cancer Australia.

When Yuko comes to the Newborn Care Unit, all the babies feel a bit better. 💞

Yuko herself was a premature baby, and spends her Thursday playing her famous harp throughout the unit.

Our nurses say the music calms them and lets them pause for a moment.

Thank you, Yuko, for bringing the art of music to us.

“People have families waiting for them at home. They have people who love them and people who need them. It's not just your own life that's at risk – innocent people are at risk too.” ❤️‍🩹

Last year, an out-of-control driver travelling over 150km/h around a corner collided head-on with Chloe and her dad, causing the dashboard to crush her legs and trap her in the car for 40 minutes while emergency crews worked to free her.

“When it first happened, I was so sure I was dead,” Chloe said.

“I could see my dad fading in and out of sleep so I kept tapping him to keep him awake. I couldn’t feel my legs and didn’t know if they were still attached to my body.”

She sustained multiple serious injuries, including a neck, femur and ankle fracture, a punctured spleen, liver lacerations and leg trauma.

She spent nearly one month recovering in our trauma ward, with her dad in the next room and our wonderful team who took care of her. 🧑‍⚕️

“All of the team treated us so well and make a huge impact on our experience,” Chloe said.

“I couldn’t be more grateful and will never forget their kindness and support during such a significant time.”

While the journey was long and hard, Chloe didn’t give up. 💪

“If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be to keep going because things do get better,” she said.

“There is light at the end of the tunnel.” ✨
