As the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games come to a close, it's the perfect time to celebrate the people and environment behind so many incredible performances.

Griffith University athletes finished the Games with 39 medals, including 21 gold, 6 silver and 12 bronze, continuing Griffith's extraordinary legacy of success on the international stage 🏅 🥳 👏

But this story isn't about medals.

It's about the environment that helps make those achievements possible.

Behind every performance is a community of coaches, educators, researchers and mentors, led by Griffith Sports College, helping student-athletes pursue excellence in both sport and study.

As Brisbane 2032 approaches, the Gold Coast's role as a centre for high-performance sport continues to grow. The Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct has long brought together education, research, healthcare and elite sport, creating a strong foundation for the city's next chapter.

Our latest 25th Anniversary story explores the people and environment behind Griffith's success in high-performance sport.

There's something really special about taking time out of a busy week to get together.

Yesterday, friends from across the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct came together for a community BBQ in the park. It was a chance to catch up with familiar faces, meet some new ones and enjoy a well-earned break in the sunshine.

We even threw in a game of Human Bingo, which proved to be a fun way to start conversations with people you might not have met before.

Thanks to everyone who joined us. It's moments like these that remind us our greatest strength isn't just what we do, it's the community we're building together.

Those numbers tell the story of one of Australia's largest hospital relocations.
What they don't capture is the months of planning, the hundreds of clinicians and support staff, and the shared commitment to ensuring every patient arrived safely at their new hospital.

The opening of Gold Coast University Hospital in 2013 didn't just transform healthcare on the Gold Coast. It strengthened education, accelerated research and brought to life a vision that had been years in the making.

Today, that vision continues to evolve. New facilities, expanded services and continued investment are ensuring Gold Coast University Hospital grows alongside one of Australia's fastest-growing regions, building on the foundation laid by that landmark move.

Every great city has a moment where someone dares to imagine something bigger.

For the Gold Coast, that moment began with a belief. A belief that this city could become something far beyond its beaches, its tourism and its construction boom. That world-class health, research, education and innovation could find a home here and change what the Gold Coast means to the world.🌏

What followed was 25 years of vision, courage and quiet determination. ✨

In this chapter of our anniversary series, visionaries Di Dixon, Bryan Case, and Ned Pankhurst take us back to where it all began. The ideas, the risks, the belief in a city that was ready for more.

And introducing their story is someone who has had a front row seat to all of it. 25 years ago, Kathy Kruger was a young journalist reporting on that very vision. Today, she remains part of the team delivering it.

More than 26 years ago, before the vision for the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct officially took shape, an ambitious research vision was already beginning on the Gold Coast.

Featuring Distinguished Professor Mark von Itzstein AO FAA FAHMS FRACI and Dr Chris Davis, this story explores the origins of the Institute for Glycomics (now the Griffith University Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics) and the vision that helped place the Gold Coast on the global biomedical research map.

Following the discovery of the influenza drug Relenza, Professor Mark von Itzstein saw an opportunity, and what followed was the growth of internationally recognised biomedical research capability, helping drive discoveries, partnerships and technologies designed to improve lives around the world.

This is just one of the stories shaping 25 years of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, with more to be shared across the year.
