Supporting learning at home doesn't need to be complicated.

Often, it's the small things that matter: encouragement, consistency, curiosity, and recognising effort.

We've shared a few simple ideas that may be helpful for parents and carers.

As with most things in parenting, what works for one child may not work for another.

Sometimes the questions aren't easy to answer.

Why is school feeling so hard for my child and easy for others?

Why does homework take so long?

Why does my child seem to be working so hard but still struggling?

There can be many reasons for this, and every child is different.

Learning is about more than academic results. It involves attention, memory, reasoning, problem-solving, language, processing information, and many other skills that work together every day.

Cognitive assessments are one way psychologists can gain a deeper understanding of how a child learns, thinks, and processes information.

If these questions have crossed your mind, this post may be a helpful starting point.

It provides a brief overview of cognitive assessments and the role they can play in understanding a child's unique learning profile.

There can be something comforting about recognising that difficult moments are part of being human.

Not something we've caused.

Not something we've failed at.

Just part of life.

DBT is about learning practical skills to help us navigate those moments when they arise, with greater awareness, confidence, and self-compassion.

Have you ever looked back at a situation and thought,

"I wish I had handled that differently."

Maybe you reacted in the heat of the moment.
Maybe you shut down.
Maybe you said nothing at all.

Most of us aren't taught how to navigate big emotions, stress, or difficult conversations.

DBT is about learning skills that can help with exactly that.

Not because you'll never struggle again.

But because it's easier to get through hard moments when you have something to lean on.

Some things can be changed.

Some things can't.

When we spend all our energy fighting what we can't control, it can leave us exhausted.

Sometimes it's okay to stop fighting the wave and focus on staying afloat.

Many of us get quite good at looking after the people around us.

Checking in on friends. Supporting family. Showing up when we're needed.

But when things feel difficult for us, it can be harder to know what we need.

Sometimes it's a pause.
Sometimes it's rest.
Sometimes it's talking things through with someone we trust.

Learning to notice those moments and respond to ourselves with the same care we offer others can take time.

And that's okay.

Doing well doesn't mean you never feel overwhelmed.

Having a hard day doesn't erase the progress you've made.

Wanting change doesn't mean you have to have it all figured out.

One of the things we appreciate about DBT is how it makes room for both. Rather than viewing experiences as one thing or another, DBT encourages a more flexible way of understanding ourselves and the challenges we face.

Sometimes there can be relief in recognising that progress and struggle, confidence and uncertainty, acceptance and change can all exist at the same time.

Not everything has to be either/or.

Sometimes we can feel okay and overwhelmed at the same time.
Certain about one thing and unsure about another.
Ready for change while also wanting things to stay familiar.

One of the things we really like about DBT is how it reminds us that different feelings and experiences can exist at the same time, and that’s a very normal part of being human.

A little clinic tour with Tina. 🤍

We’ve always wanted our clinic to feel warm, welcoming, and comfortable, not just for our clients, but for their families too. We know visiting a new place for the first time can feel a little unfamiliar, so we hope this gives you a better feel for the space before you arrive.

Every room has been thoughtfully put together with care for the people who spend time here each day.

Do you have a favourite room or little corner in the clinic? We’d love to know.
