Supporting Our Veterans: Managing Your Household Services

Australian Veteran Health Services (AVHS) is here to help you navigate and discuss your eligibility for the DVA Access to Household Services program.

This program supports veterans with essential domestic assistance, including regular lawn mowing and yard maintenance, helping you maintain safety and independence at home.

Local and Veteran Owned Providers

To deliver these services, AVHS partners with trusted local small businesses. For example, in Cairns, we coordinate with Jim's Mowing which is a small, family run and veteran owned business. Like many of our preferred providers, they are fully insured, understand DVA guidelines and have firsthand knowledge of the unique needs of the veteran community.

3 things veterans don’t know about nutrition and their health:

1. Gut health and mental health are directly linked.
The gut-brain axis is real. Inflammation, poor diet, and digestive issues can worsen depression and anxiety, conditions that disproportionately affect the veteran community.

2. DVA covers Dietitian appointments.
Gold Card holders, fully covered for all clinically necessary conditions. White Card holders, covered for accepted service-related conditions. Most veterans we speak to didn’t know this.

3. Integrated care beats isolated care every time.
Seeing a Dietitian who talks directly to your GP and mental health team produces measurably better outcomes than managing each condition in a silo.

We’ve added Dietitian services at AVHS Springfield for exactly this reason.

Winter is here, and your health cannot wait.

For veterans, the colder months can bring more than just a chill. Pain flares up. Sleep gets harder. And it’s easy to let your mental health quietly slide when the days get shorter and the motivation drops.

That’s why we’ve put together your Winter Health Checklist, because you’ve already done the hard yards, and staying on top of your health shouldn’t be another battle.

Get your flu shot. DVA covers flu vaccinations for eligible veterans. Simple, free, and could save you weeks of misery.

Check in on your mental health. Winter isolation is real. If you’ve been feeling flat, withdrawn, or just not yourself, that matters. Talk to someone. Our mental health team is here.

Review your pain management. Cold weather and old injuries don’t mix well. Our physiotherapy team can help you move better and hurt less this winter.

Meet the Directors behind our Deakin, ACT clinic.

Dr Andrew Cronin began his career as an Aeronautical Engineer in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), serving with No. 2 Flying Training School, the Defence Materiel Organisation, and 33 Squadron before pursuing medicine. As a Veteran himself, Dr Cronin understands the sacrifices made by those who have served the country. He is deeply committed to ensuring Australian veterans receive the world-class healthcare they deserve.

Dr Steven Smith served as a Civilian Contracted Medical Officer for the ADF Garrison Support contract, working across Townsville and South-East Queensland. He also completed the ADF Aviation Medical Officer Course in 2015 and went on to found AVHS, driven by a deep commitment to the men and women who’ve served this country.

Together, they lead our Deakin clinic with firsthand knowledge of what it means to serve and what veterans truly need when it comes to their health.

This is why we do what we do.

Brett visited our Springfield clinic today and brought flowers and chocolates for the team, simply to say thank you for the support he has received from AVHS. It is moments like this that remind us that behind every appointment, every phone call, and every interaction, there is a real person whose life we have the privilege of being a part of.

We hear a lot about the importance of giving back, but if you ever need a reminder of just how good it feels, try a selfless act and see for yourself. The return is unlike anything else.

Did you know you can access DVA while still serving in the ADF?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions out there, and we’re here to set the record straight.

You do not need to wait until you discharge to lodge a DVA claim. If you have an injury or illness related to your service, you can start the claims process while you’re still in uniform.

In fact, starting early is one of the smartest things you can do for your transition.
