The future of public health was on display this week! 🥹👏

Congratulations to our placement students Aaron, Sarah, Tina, Nicole, Tori, Jackson and Andy on completing their placements! They are now one step closer to graduating from their Health Sciences degrees 🥳

Their work explored some of the key factors that shape health in our community.

This included a pop-up health screening program to help identify health risks early, auditing Springfield's food environment and walkability, and mapping access to healthcare services across Springfield.

These are all important pieces of the puzzle as we work towards a healthier Springfield 🫀

A special thank you to supervisors Kirsten and Cal for sharing their expertise and helping shape the next generation of public health professionals.

Students, your contributions have been incredibly valuable. The insights you've generated will help inform future research to build a healthier Springfield 👏❤️ Thank you!

For Pearl, food is about so much more than what’s on our plate 🍽️🫶

As a member of our research team, Pearl is investigating how food can help young people develop skills, confidence and healthy habits that can support their wellbeing.

As a final-year PhD candidate and Accredited Practising Dietitian, her interest in this area was inspired by her work as a dietitian.

She saw firsthand how learning about food and cooking can help people feel more confident, connected and empowered.

“I’m a foodie and have always been interested in how food shapes everyday life beyond nutrition, particularly its social and emotional roles.”

A lot of Pearl's work is in the Springfield community, providing nutrition education and hands-on culinary activities for young people, with the aim to strengthen food literacy and psychosocial wellbeing.

When she’s not doing research, Pearl enjoys spending time with loved ones, discovering new food spots, and spending time with her cat. 🐱

Thank you, Pearl, for helping us better understand how food, nutrition and cooking skills can support young people's wellbeing.

If you're a Springfield local and you'd like to get involved in Pearl's research, get in touch and we can connect you with her.

Congratulations are in order 🎉

Attended by our wonderful team members Lamees, Emma, Kirsten, Jenna and Linju, the Queensland Cardiovascular Research Network Showcase last week was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate cardiovascular research and the people driving it forward.

Huge congrats to Lamees Ali on receiving a $5000 QCVRN PhD Development Grant! 👏 Supervised by Dr Jenna Thomas, Dr Jenna Taylor and Professor Julie Redfern, the grant will support her PhD research exploring ways to improve cardiac rehabilitation programs across Australia, with a particular focus on understanding and incorporating patient experiences into quality improvement.

We were also proud to see Emma open the event with a keynote lecture, highlighting her outstanding contributions to this field, while Jenna also shared findings from the 7-year follow-up of her PhD study, showcasing the impact of her incredible research.

A special congratulations also to Linju, who was recognised as a finalist for the GrantEd Group Cardiovascular Research Excellence Award.

It was a wonderful day celebrating research, collaboration, and the talented people working to improve heart health outcomes for communities across Australia 🎉🌟🫀
