A survey of 506 people in Australia with endometriosis reveal frustrations in the healthcare system. Doctor dismissal is widely reported as a reason for their diagnostic delay, with 61.5% of participants reporting previously received a false diagnosis. Not only is this frustrating, it has significant impact on quality of life and fertility, highlighting the importance of finding a specialist who listens and takes your symptoms seriously.

Endometriosis takes an average of 6 to 8 years from first symptoms to diagnosis. Endometriosis pain involves a complex interaction between the nervous system, muscle function and psychological factors, creating a cycle that compounds and amplifies pain over time. Breaking the cycle requires a holistic approach. This can include pain education, pelvic physiotherapy, and lifestyle adjustments such as sleep, diet, and stress reduction.

SONOGRAPHERS EYE VIEW | Rectosigmoid endometriotic lesion

Ultrasound imaging is a valuable diagnostic tool that allows doctors to identify anatomical changes caused by endometriosis, non-invasively. With the information from a scan, specialists can make more effective treatment decisions – including surgical approach.

In this example, a colorectal surgeon may be present to remove lesions and restore bowel function in a single surgery, rather than requiring a follow-up procedure.

Not all endometriosis lesions are alike. Superficial and deep lesions differ in location, depth and the way they present, and detecting them requires far more than a standard scan.

At Sydney Endometriosis, we work closely with specialist sonographers at using targeted approaches to identify what a routine scan would miss. Get in touch to find out how we can help.
