When a chatty child suddenly goes quiet at school, it's easy to assume they're just shy. But what if it's something more?

Many children with Selective Mutism are confident and talkative at home, yet become unable to speak in certain settings because of overwhelming anxiety. It's not a choice, and it's not defiance.

This article highlights an important message: Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder, not shyness. Understanding the difference can make all the difference in getting children the right support early.

If your child speaks freely at home but struggles to talk at school or around others, know that help is available—and with the right evidence-based support, children with Selective Mutism can make meaningful progress.

Helping your child build emotional confidence starts with you.

Our Tuning in to Kids Online Parent Group is designed to give you practical, evidence-based strategies to better understand your child, support their emotions, and respond in ways that strengthen connection.

In this small group program, you’ll learn how to:
• talk about feelings with more confidence
• coach your child through big emotions
• reduce behaviour challenges
• support your child’s social and emotional development

Research shows that children with stronger emotional skills are more likely to build friendships, cope with challenges, and thrive both at school and beyond.

💬 She didn’t speak for 16 years — until she finally found her voice.

This powerful story highlights the lived experience of a teenager with Selective Mutism and reminds us that silence is not a choice — it’s rooted in anxiety, fear, and misunderstood needs.

At the Selective Mutism Clinic, we work with children, teens, and families to gently support communication at their own pace, using evidence-based strategies that build confidence over time. Progress doesn’t always look loud — but it is meaningful. 💙

If this story resonates with you or your family, know that support is available — and no child is “too old” to be helped.

Melanie Manderino has struggled with selective mutism her whole life. She tells PEOPLE that talking felt like "choking," and reveals the decision that changed everything.
