Our Kolling Institute Year in Review highlights the significant impact, collaboration and momentum across the Kolling Institute, and comes as we mark an important milestone with the launch of our 2026–2030 Research Strategy.

Kolling researchers achieved great success in 2025, expanding the scale, reach and influence of their research across their discovery, translational and clinical disciplines.

These achievements reflect a growing capability, with increased activity, stronger partnerships and a rising profile at a local, national and international level.

We would like to thank the many people who have played a key role in driving our progress from our joint venture partners, the University of Sydney and the Northern Sydney Local Health District, to our partners, donors and the Kolling research community.

Some welcome news for more than three million Australians living with osteoarthritis, with a multi-million dollar grant to help shift fragmented osteoarthritis care towards prevention, earlier prediction and much better outcomes.

Globally-recognised researcher and rheumatologist Professor David Hunter has received the highly competitive NHMRC grant, giving his team the stability to pursue an ambitious program of research.

It’s hoped their work will deliver practical improvements for patients, clinicians and the broader health system.

It was an important day for the Kolling with the official launch of our Health Research Strategy 2026-2030.

More than 150 people attended the event, including a large share of the clinicians, researchers and partners who had developed the strategic framework.

The strategy is a roadmap to strengthen our research expertise and expand access to high-value care. It will guide future growth, innovation and impact.

A key feature is the inclusion of cancer as the institute’s fourth focus area of research, reflecting the growing importance of cancer research.

The strategy will aim to build our discovery, innovation and implementation research through a greater focus on community partnerships and collaboration, and improving workforce and environmental sustainability.

It’s hoped the strategy will deliver crucial progress well beyond the next five years, escalating the impact of our work and strengthening our ability to drive high-quality research.

Kolling Institute researcher and physiotherapist Brian Kim is driving research using AI to better understand muscle fat, a common but poorly measured feature on MRI scans.

The research is showing that even small amounts of muscle fat may increase the risk of poor surgical outcomes.

Brian hopes muscle fat data will become a routine part of MRI reporting, helping clinicians better assess muscle health, plan surgery and track recovery. And the long-term goal is to build a large dataset of muscle measurements to support more personalised patient care.
