🎨 “Look Up!” Creative Portrait 🎨
For kids 7+
📅 Date: Monday, 5/10/2026
⏰ Time: 10AM – 1PM
💰 Price: $60 per student

🎨This workshop is amazing for young creators 7-17 y.o. This session isn’t typical academic portrait class — it’s a soft, expressive workshop where your child will learn an illustrative approach to painting faces, full of imagination and colour.

✔️Your child will discover the basics of face proportions and skin tones, and how to use a colour to choose beautiful, expressive palettes. They’ll paint eyes, hair, and clothing details, gently guided every step of the way — perfect for children who love to create characters of their own.

👉This is a longer, immersive workshop, so your child can take their time exploring fundamentals through to lovely little details. We’ll have a 15–20 min break partway through.

All materials included — acrylic paint on A3 craft paper.

Your child will walk away with a stunning, one-of-a-kind portrait they’ll be so proud to show off! 🎨✨

🎨Art Isn't Extra — It's Essential🎨

The Austrian-American artist and art therapy pioneer Edith Kramer (1916–2014) believed that an art teacher should spend at least half of their time practising art themselves, rather than focusing solely on teaching children.

She argued that a teacher should be a working artist, sculptor, or graphic artist, because children learn best when their teacher demonstrates work professionally for them — not just gives instructions.

This reflects the traditional relationship between a master and their apprentices, where the main principle was simply "Do as I do."

Children could witness a living example of the skills and creativity they were learning.

For Kramer, art was never a luxury or a "nice extra" alongside school subjects — it was something children genuinely need. Through drawing, sculpting, and working with materials, children process their emotions, build confidence, and make sense of the world around them. Creativity isn't a separate skill to master; it's part of how a child grows, thinks, and feels understood.

At Iris Art Studio, we work by the same principle. Every class is led by a practising artist, and every child is given real tools, real materials, and the freedom to explore.

We see art not as an extracurricular activity, but as something children truly need — for their confidence, their emotional growth, and their sense of self.
