There is such a push to ‘biohack’ ageing and most people are looking for a quick fix in the form of a magic herb or supplement. The reality is, these don’t exist.

Instead, we should look at what regions have a high number of centenarians and attempt to do what they do to stay healthy and vital.

We can’t be perfect, of course. Most of us don’t have the time to bake fresh bread daily or grow a vegetable garden (but I recommend that you do if you can, even if it’s pots of herbs and leafy green veggies). But the more we do to move towards eating real fresh food, move our bodies and spend quality time with loved ones, the more chance we have to be healthy and vital.

Breakfast cereals are heavily processed foods and laden with ingredients that can disrupt your gut health. The ones labelled as ‘gluten free’ are often the worst offenders too.

Why?

If we take an example of gluten free Special K, the ingredients list contains brown rice, synthetic nutrients, sugar, salt and an emulsifier (471).

Synthetic nutrients are used as the processing strips the nutrients that were initially present in the brown rice. I’m yet to meet a single person who is deficient in something that the body doesn’t even make.

Sugar, salt and the emulsifier all impact gut health in a number of ways, but perhaps most importantly, all three (but especially the E471) are known to open the tight junctions between the gut cells, resulting in ‘leaky gut’. This enables bacteria and partially digested food to enter the blood stream. The irony is that most people opt for gluten free products to protect their gut!

Instead, what if we look at organic rolled oats?

They are a single ingredient, naturally gluten free (yes!!) and organic forms will be free from glyphosate. Better yet, oats are rich in beta glucans, a prebiotic fibre that feeds health promoting bacteria.

Special note: if you are coeliac, you need to ensure you get ‘gluten free’ oats that have been processed on equipment separate to gluten containing grains.

Let’s compare the cost too:
- Gluten free Special K - $7 for 350g.
- Organic rolled oats - $8 for 1000g.

Take home message: ALWAYS go for minimally processed foods as close to nature. You might be surprised you’ll save money by eating this way too.

Winter for me is all about hearty soups. Many of my clients struggle to get legumes into their diet on a regular basis, and soups and curries are a simple way to overcome this. And they are delicious and warming!

𝙄𝙉𝙂𝙍𝙀𝘿𝙄𝙀𝙉𝙏𝙎
A good splash of olive oil
1 large brown onion, diced
3 carrots, peeled and diced
2 celery stalks, diced
1 red capsicum, diced
2 large mushrooms, diced
2-4 cloves of garlic, diced/crushed (my motto is the more the better)
1 heaped tsp of freshly grated ginger (or ¼ tsp. dried)
1 medium sweet potato, peeled and diced
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp curry paste/garam masala/ground cumin/whatever you have in the pantry
4 cups stock of choice (i.e. veggie, chicken)
1 cup water
1 cup red lentils
4 large kale leaves, finely chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
½ large lemon, zest + juice
¼ cup fresh herbs of choice (i.e. parsley/coriander)

𝘿𝙄𝙍𝙀𝘾𝙏𝙄𝙊𝙉𝙎
Chop the veggies (or if you’re lazy like me, throw them in a thermomix or food processor and roughly chop).
Gently warm the oil, add all the chopped veggies (except kale, lemon and herbs) to a large pot and saute gently for 5 minutes. Add the garlic and stir for a minute or until you get bored.
Add pretty much everything else except for the kale, lemon and herbs. Stir to combine, throw the lid on the pot, bring to the boil and then gently simmer for around half an hour or until everything is cooked through.
Throw in the kale for a minute until it starts to wilt and then turn off the stove. You’re done!
Serve up your soup, add a squeeze of lemon juice, a zing of lemon zest and as many fresh herbs as you desire.

Enjoy!

As you can probably tell, this recipe can be mixed and matched to suit your tastes and what is in your fridge and pantry. I find soups are super forgiving, so just go for it. Add more spice (I do) or less. Experiment and find what works for you. The key is to make it nourishing AND delicious so you want to eat it!

I adore winter, especially here on the Granite Belt. Friends from afar are always surprised to hear we live in a cool climate and that the coldest it has ever been where I live is -11 degrees! Needless to say, my tiny home is fitted with a wood burning stove that allows me to heat the place, cook on the hotplates and bake in the oven. I love it.

Keeping well during these winter months can be challenging, especially if you work in an office and don’t get outside much during the day.

Here are some simple tips we can all follow to stay healthy during winter:
- Get sun on your skin (as much as you can bare to expose) in the early morning, at midday and in the late afternoon if you can do it.
- Stay hydrated. Many people struggle with drinking water in the cooler months, but fluids are essential for us (and yes herbal teas also count).
- Stay well nourished. I love winter for warming soups, slow cooked casseroles and curries packed with veggies, garlic, onion and spices.
- Keep moving. Get outside in the fresh air as much as you can, including gardening, walking, cycling etc.

Happy winter everyone!

Hands up if you are taking it easy this weekend?

We are never going to get rid of stress in our lives, but we can balance it out by taking time out for ourselves. Never underestimate the power of slow days to restore yourself and reconnect with your loved ones.

Instead of treading the path of being busy all of the time (seriously our society promotes it), let’s celebrate doing nothing and slowing down.

I hope you have a wonderful, restful, joyful weekend.

Konjac noodles are the ultimate food as medicine, especially for women with hormonal issues. Why? Because they are the richest food source of glucomannan, a compound that can improve liver detoxification and reduce recycling of oestrogen, as well as other toxins.

They are definitely an acquired taste, but many of my clients happily consume them. You can also make konjac rice using 50% konjac and 50% cauliflower to reduce the strong flavour.

Have you given them a go? What did you think?

It’s not sexy, I know, but it’s important that we talk about…stinky gas!

If you pass wind and it smells like rotten eggs or like something has died, then your bowel is trying to tell you something.

It could be for a few reasons, but high hydrogen sulphide production is one of them. It’s responsible for the classic rotten egg fart aroma that isn’t too pleasing to the nose.

Hydrogen sulphide is an essential gasotransmitter, but in high levels, it can cause a stack of inflammation in the gut. It is also very strongly associated with restrictive dieting such as long term low FODMAP dieting and skin conditions including rosacea.

If this resonates with you, I can help. Microbiome testing may be the best money you have ever spent, but even if you can’t afford the testing, there are some simple interventions we can use to reduce the stench and improve your relationships and social life as a result!

There is huge variation in what is considered ‘normal’ when it comes to bowel motion regularity. Most naturopaths, including myself, will say anywhere from 1 to 3 good poos a day is ideal, but you also need to consider other factors like how well formed and the size of the stools themselves. If you are going once a day and only passing a few rabbit pellet sized poos, then you’re probably constipated.

Increasing dietary fibre is often recommended for constipation, but for some people this can make things much worse.

This is because some people have bacteria in their large intestine that produce a compound called methane. It’s for a reason (because our bodies are incredibly smart), meaning our body is always trying to make adjustments to keep us healthy and happy. In this case, it’s about converting excess hydrogen (because that can cause other issues).

Methane also interacts with our enteric nervous system, effectively slowing things down, leading to bloating, excessive (often stinky) gas and slowed bowel movements (also known as constipation).

If you are relying on laxatives to pass a bowel motion, then you are potentially making the situation worse. PEG, the key ingredient in Movicol, is known to negatively impact gut and microbiome health.

So, if you aren’t pooing like a champion and eating fibre makes it worse, book a FREE 15 minute discovery call today to find out how I can help you get your mojo back. Seriously, you will want to high-five someone when you leave the bathroom.

If you could look into your future right now and find out you would develop a disease later in life that could have been prevented, what would you change right now?

Next question: If you didn’t know what was coming in the future, would you still change that same thing now?

Final question: If you already know that the thing you would change isn’t doing you any good, what is stopping you from changing right now?

These are BIG questions. I know. But I do think they are worth contemplating.

I am seeing a lot of clients who are dealing with major illnesses, as well as within my own family. Even in the face of a life-threatening illness, I still see people struggle to make these changes.

I think we all know the basics when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, yet we often don’t follow them. I know I haven’t always looked after myself, but I’m doing better now. Not perfect, but much better.

How about you?

What bad habit would you like to kick and why? What is stopping you?
