Scooters might look simple, but there’s a lot going on. 👀

Because you’re working mostly on one leg, the exercise challenges your single-leg stability, balance and control through the hip, knee and ankle.

Why does that matter?
We spend a huge part of everyday life on one leg eg every step you take when walking, running or climbing stairs requires your body to stay controlled while the other leg moves.

That’s why we love exercises like scooters in Pilates. It’s not just about feeling the burn. It’s about building strength and control that carries over into how you move outside the studio.

A deeper squat doesn’t always require more stretching.

In this case, the biggest change came from improving motor control, ie helping the body coordinate the hips, knees, ankles and trunk more effectively during the movement.

Instead of simply trying to force more range, we looked at:
• Where the movement was breaking down
• How well the patient could control their centre of mass
• How the hips, knees and ankles were working together
• Whether they could access the range they already had

After a few targeted motor control exercises, the squat changed dramatically.

This is why our approach isn’t just:
“Where are you tight?”
We want to understand why your body is moving the way it is, then choose exercises that address the actual limiting factor.

Sometimes that might be mobility.
Sometimes strength.
Sometimes pain.
And sometimes, like here, it’s simply learning how to organise the movement better.

Assess first. Then treat what actually needs changing.

Reformer lunge variations with Natasha 💪🏻 A simple way to build stronger legs and cleaner movement.

Why we like these:
• Single-leg strength (glutes + quads)
• Hip and knee control (great for running, stairs, and sport)
• Core + pelvic stability without loading the spine heavily

Key technique cues to try:
1. Keep your front heel heavy and knee tracking over the 2nd toe
2. Stay tall through the torso (don’t collapse forward)

Start with smaller range if you’re new, then progress depth and resistance as control improves.
