Interested to know exactly what a Dietitian is, and how they can help you? We’re here to explain!

A Dietitian is an allied health professional who specialises in food and nutrition. They provide expert, personalised dietary advice to help people improve their health and wellbeing. Dietitians can help people of all ages with specific dietary restrictions or requirements, for example, people with chronic conditions such as diabetes or food allergies.

To become a qualified Dietitian in Australia, you must have an accredited university degree in nutrition and dietetics and meet the registration criteria to join the Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) program.

In Australia, dietitians are different to nutritionists. All dietitians are nutritionists, however, nutritionists cannot be called dietitians, unless they have a dietetics qualification. The profession of nutritionist is not regulated in Australia, meaning anyone can call themselves a nutritionist without having any specific training.

At Healthy Lifestyles Australia, all our Dietitians are Accredited Practicing Dietitians.

Keen to learn more about Dietitians? This will be a continuing series, and we'll explain what conditions our Dietitians can help you with, and how you can be referred to one.

If you want to get started right away, or ask a few more questions, give our friendly team a call on (07) 3088 2323 and we'll be happy to answer them!

Shakshuka (or Shakshouka) is a Middle Eastern dish of tomato and baked eggs. It’s perfect for a slow Sunday morning with some crusty sourdough toast!
Ingredients: Serves 2-3
- 1x 400g tin crushed tomatoes
- 1 tin four bean mix (or legumes of choice)
- 5 eggs
- 50-100g chorizo sausage (optional), diced
- 1 tbsp minced garlic
- 2 tsp smoked paprika
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4-5 slices multigrain sourdough to serve
Method:
1. In a pan over medium-high heat, add the chorizo and let cook until fat is released. If not using chorizo, add 1tbsp extra virgin olive oil to the pan
2. Add the garlic, oregano and smoked paprika and stir until evenly coated
3. Add the tinned tomato and rinsed (and drained) legumes, and stir.
4. Let reduce for 2-4 mins, stirring frequently
5. Turn the heat down to low-medium and (as best you can) make 5 wells evenly spaced
6. Crack the egg into the wells and cover with a lid
7. Let cook for 10 minutes until the whites appear solid - cook longer for hard eggs, or less for soft cooked eggs
8. While cooking toast the sourdough
9. When done, remove the pan from the heat and lightly sprinkle with salt, pepper and a drizzle of olive oil
10. Serve with the sourdough and enjoy!
