40 years of Genea. 40 years of helping make dreams of building a family possible. 💙

I feel incredibly privileged to work in a field that has evolved so dramatically over the past four decades. From the early days of IVF to the advances in reproductive science, genetics, embryology and personalised fertility care we have today, the progress has been extraordinary.

What excites me most is that we are still moving forward. Every year brings new research, new technology and new opportunities to improve the way we care for patients and support them on their journey to parenthood.

Being part of Genea as we celebrate 40 years is a wonderful reminder of how far fertility care has come - and how much more there is still to discover.

Here’s to 40 years of innovation, science and, most importantly, helping people build their families.

Can I improve my egg quality in the 3 months before IVF?

Answer:

Possibly. While age remains the biggest factor affecting egg quality, the three months before IVF are important because that's how long it takes for eggs to mature.

During this time, focusing on a healthy lifestyle - including a balanced diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol, and managing stress - may help support egg health.

In some cases, your fertility specialist may also recommend specific supplements based on your individual circumstances.

The best approach is always a personalised plan discussed with your doctor.

My passion for medicine has always been at the heart of my career.

I began as a medical scientist, specialising in haematology, microbiology and biochemistry, before realising I wanted to work more directly with patients.

That passion led me to study medicine, where I could combine my love of science with the privilege of caring for people.

If you're looking for compassionate, evidence-based care for your fertility or women's health journey, I'd love to help. Get in touch to book a consultation.

FAQ: How can you help prevent CMV?

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus that often causes no symptoms in healthy adults, but it can pose serious risks during pregnancy if passed on to an unborn baby.

The good news? There are simple steps you can take to help reduce your risk:

✔️ Wash your hands thoroughly after changing nappies, wiping noses or handling children's toys.
✔️ Avoid sharing food, drinks, utensils, dummies or toothbrushes with young children.
✔️ Try to avoid contact with saliva when kissing children—kiss them on the forehead or cheek instead.
✔️ Regularly clean toys, benches and other frequently touched surfaces.

These small everyday habits can significantly reduce the chance of CMV infection during pregnancy.

If you're pregnant or planning a pregnancy and have questions about CMV, speak with your healthcare provider for personalised advice.

Birth Trauma Awareness Week reminds us that while every birth is unique, not every birth experience is positive - and it's important that we talk about it.

Birth trauma can be physical, emotional, or both. For some, it may involve complications during labour or birth. For others, it can stem from feeling unheard, unsupported, or frightened during the experience. These feelings are valid, and they can have lasting effects on a person's wellbeing, recovery, and even future family planning.

As a fertility specialist, I know that the journey to parenthood can already be filled with uncertainty and emotion. That's why compassionate, respectful, patient-centred care matters at every stage—from trying to conceive through pregnancy, birth and beyond.

This week is an opportunity to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind anyone who has experienced birth trauma that their story deserves to be heard. Support is available, and healing is possible.

💙 If this topic resonates with you, know that you're not alone.

For many families, the path to parenthood is far more complex than people realise.

In this news story, Dr Rose McDonnell discusses a groundbreaking national IVF trial investigating the role of natural killer (NK) cells and whether they may contribute to recurrent implantation failure and recurrent miscarriage in some patients.

The trial, led by Genea, aims to better understand why some embryos don't implant despite multiple IVF attempts, with the hope of improving outcomes for thousands of Australians. If successful, this research could help identify patients who may benefit from more personalised treatment before an embryo transfer.

Stories like Ria's are a powerful reminder that behind every IVF journey is incredible resilience, hope, and the drive to better understand fertility through research.
