Can we tell if someone has the potential to drive before they even get their learner licence? 🚗
Yep - with our potential to drive assessment.

Oscar and his mum came to explore whether driving might be a realistic goal. Through our clinical assessment and passenger-based activities, we assessed the underlying skills needed for safe driving.
For Oscar, the assessment showed that driving is unlikely to be the right pathway. But that's not the end of the story.
Together, we identified opportunities to build skills such as hazard perception, navigation, gap selection, and problem-solving — skills that will help him become more independent and confident getting around the community.

We were so impressed with how positively Oscar approached the outcome. Independence comes in many forms, and we're excited to support him on the next stage of his journey. 👏

After months of planning, we're excited to launch the full program for the Driving Well OT National Vehicle Modifications & Driving Solutions Conference.

This isn't just another conference.

Great result for Anthony recently! 👏🚗

Anthony completed a manual C Class driving assessment after his doctor requested confirmation that his disability wasn't impacting his ability to safely drive a manual vehicle.
While he usually drives an automatic, Anthony had previously driven manuals and was keen to have those driving privileges reinstated so he could drive work vehicles when needed.

The good news? ✅
No concerns were identified during the clinical assessment, and Anthony went on to demonstrate safe and competent driving skills in the manual vehicle during the on-road assessment.

We're pleased to recommend that his manual transmission licence condition be removed, giving him greater flexibility both at work and in everyday life.

Well done, Anthony! Another great example of how a driving assessment can provide clarity, confidence, and opportunities. 🚗💨

We've seen the long and the short of it 🚗

Last week, our Driver Trained Occupational Therapist worked with two learner drivers at opposite ends of the height spectrum—one around 7 feet tall, the other around 4 feet tall with dwarfism.

Two very different drivers. One important lesson: there's no such thing as a standard driver. Every vehicle and every modification must be tailored to the individual.

Wonderful afternoon back in the HR truck around the Wynnum area recently — it's been a while. 🚛
Heavy vehicle assessments are always a reminder of the significant responsibilities that come with operating larger vehicles on our roads.
On this occasion, the outcome wasn't the one the driver had hoped for. Due to the progression of his medical condition, he was no longer able to consistently demonstrate the level of mirror observation required to safely operate a heavy rigid truck. Effective observation is critical in the truck environment, where blind spots, vehicle size, and road positioning demand constant awareness of what's happening around you.
While it's never easy to deliver difficult news, part of our role is ensuring that drivers, passengers, and the broader community remain safe. Sometimes that means recognising when a particular class of vehicle is no longer suitable, even when the driver has many years of experience behind them.
These are some of the toughest conversations we have, but safety must always come first.

Kayleigh is navigating her driving journey with a few medical conditions in the mix, including the need for vehicle modifications to drive safely and independently.

She has been progressing beautifully through her specialised driving lessons with driving instructor extraordinaire Darren, building confidence and skills with every session. 🚗

Kayleigh is currently driving with a Fadiel FSK2005 combined brake and trigger accelerator with a toggle switch indicator (managing braking, steering and indicating functions), and a left-hand spinner k**b for steering.
After successfully working her way through increasingly busy traffic environments, she is now progressing to more advanced manoeuvres, including turnarounds, U-turns, parking, and highway driving.

It's been fantastic to watch her confidence grow as she masters both the vehicle modifications and the demands of real-world driving.

And with her skills continuing to develop so well, we're starting to have an exciting new conversation...
