Someone not approving of or agreeing with your choice doesn't automatically mean the choice you've made is wrong.
There will be times in our lives when the choices that feel right for us don't make sense to someone else.
They may not agree.
They may not approve.
They may question our reasoning or believe they would choose differently.
And when the person matters to us, their opinion can matter too.
I don't believe belonging to ourselves means becoming so fiercely independent that we stop listening to anyone else's perspective.
Sometimes another person sees something we don't.
They may offer insight we hadn't considered.
Their questions may invite us to look more closely at our own motivations.
And if our choices affect other people, their experience deserves consideration too.
Inner authority isn't about refusing outside influence.
It's about being able to listen, consider and discern without automatically assuming someone else must know what is right for us better than we do.
Because two people can look at the same situation through completely different lenses.
Different experiences.
Different values.
Different needs.
Different fears.
Different hopes.
Different understandings of what a meaningful life looks like.
Someone else can disagree with your choice without either of you needing to be wrong.
Perhaps the work isn't learning how to stop caring what other people think.
Perhaps it's learning how to hear what they think without losing the ability to hear yourself.
To listen without immediately complying.
To consider without automatically conceding.
To remain open enough to change your mind when something genuinely resonates...
and rooted enough to trust yourself when it doesn't.
🪷 Something to Consider
When someone you respect disagrees with you, what happens within you?
Do you become curious about their perspective?
Or do you immediately begin questioning your own?
There is wisdom in being open to what others can see.
But openness doesn't require surrendering your authority.
You can listen.
You can consider.
You can discern.
And ultimately, you can still choose.
Big love,
Kerryn 🤍
